Set out today looking to pick up a Mauser, prices were too high for the nicer ones. Luckily my local dealer had 4 cases of M44's he had just went and picked up. The whole lot were arsenal refinished so it took me little time to find a nice one. Let me tell you, other than the 1" counter bore you would think the rifle was new. It is a 1944 Izhevsk, all matching (receiver, bolt and butt plate). It has the correct refurbishment markings. Wood is excellent and the metal is very nicely and evenly finished. Bought it for $129.00 with sling, cleaning/tool kit, oiler and pouches. Tax and 120 rounds of light ball and I had a good time spending $200 bucks today. I will post pic's tomorrow hopefully. So count me in the Russian surplus crowd, I am hoping to send a few downrange tomorrow. Bill:)

Picture Added.

excellent, another conscript in the mosin army. soon we will be able to take over rhode island and rename it after our glorious hero.

from there we will march to CT. where we will name it in the honor of leon nagant.
then newyork in the name of Kalashnikov
MA in the name os Siminov
NH for Tokarev
Maine in the name of Degtyaryov.

VT we shall leave alone.

I intend to start a new thread about my M44 but I am not very happy with mine. It shoots so far left the sights cannot correct for it and I am not sure what can be done about it.

Otherwise I love the gun. Just the right amount of recoil and ammo at the right price.

kindrox: try shooting it with bayonet extended. A lot of people have found that helpful (the guns were zeroed at the factory with bayonet extended).

I have heard that, question is what does the bayonet change the vertical or horizontal.

Extending the bayo should affect the horizontal mainly you can use your rear sight to adjust the vertical if needed. My M44 shot way off to one side either way until I pulled the bullets dropped the powder charge about 2 Grs. then the accuracy really improved.

Congratulations! Degrease it thoroughly with boiling-hot-water (dump the bolt in a pan of it, then pour the water down the bore, it will melt the cosmo), clean thoroughly, and enjoy.

It's sighted in with the bayonet extended, and a very good rifle for the money. It will not be your last Mosin.

Esmith, the floor plate has two sets of numbers, both stamped. There is a mismatch number with a line through it and then it is stamped the same number as the rest. Thanks for the links. Bill

Enjoy! The bark and fireball of a Mosin carbine shooting surplus ammo is unbelieveable, and the looks you get at the range are priceless. I would also suggest, if you don't like recoil, get a slip on pad.

Thats the way to do it, go through a large number of rifles and pick the BEST! That's how I bought my second M-44. There was one with a new appearing barrel, good stock, and one of the best triggers i have ever felt on any MN. You can float the barrel, and I did on this one. It doesn't affect the appearance and all I might do otherwise in put better sights that can be converted back, if the need were to arise. I haven't tried it at longer ranges, but at shorter ranges, the rifle is phenominal, even with the cheap surplus ammunititon. Yes the recoil IS stout, but I don't shoot it when I'm tired or for extended periods of time. Other methods of improving accuracy, are listed and descibed on the surplus rifle forum.

Your post sounded really odd, wcwhitey. I thought for sure that all M44's came in pairs. I don't know many people who own odd numbers of them. I have 12 MN's. Enjoy. :)

You're gonna have a lot of fun. The M44 makes a titanic noise, wallops you with recoil, and roasts anything nearby with the massive fireball. It's about the most fun for the dollar you can buy.

You will have a blast and at night you may not need to use a flashlight.:neener:

Enjoy your new rifle they are allot of rifle for less than the price of most .22s you can't go wrong.;)

it kicks like a mule

I did put a pad on my stock, but I did not really thing the recoil was objectionable. Maybe a bit more than the .308 and on par with the Garand I shot the same day as trying out my M44.

I will try extending the bayo. I was going to go to an indoor range where the distance to the target is adjustable and try sigting it in one more time. It was so far off that at 50 yards it was tough to see what was going on.

wcwhitey: you said it had all the correct refinishing marks. please explain

i got mine at the el cajon gun exchange about a year ago. it is refinished but it shoots bitchin. i can pull some long shots with it in the range of 150-300 yards with free sites. im not sayin i can shoot a guy in the eye at that distance, but i could still shoot him. under 75 yards the accuracy suffers a little, which is kinda odd to me. maybe its just me cause most firearms ive shot do better at close range

Rogdigity, on the receiver of mine right above the serial number there is a 1/4" box with an "l" in it. This is the Russian arsenal refinish mark. If you look closely you can see a scribe on the front sight at the dovetail, this is a mark which I am told means it was factory zeroed. I just go back from the range. I am posting a pic of the target, at 100 yards groups were approx 3". It shot perfectly, about an inch above point of aim with bayonet extended sitting unsupported. I am very pleased with the rifle it has potential. The ammo was 1955 light ball (green tip) don't know much else about it, it will be assumed corrosive. Shot a total of 30 rounds and started to feel my shoulder, not bruised but was a good stopping point.

P.S. If you a google search for "Mosin M44 arsenal markings" you will come up with quite a few sight with detailed photo's that will help. Bunch of good information out there, took me about an hour to become familiar. Bill
