I keep looking at SASS; as my brother and his wife are serious competitors. Have seen a couple of the matches down here in Yuma; including a couple of side matches, which are held on the longest available 'sub-ranges' of the smallbore and pistol range complex. Tons of fun to watch! Brother "Don Coyote" shoots Duelist with smokeless; sister-in-law "Squeaky Hare" shoots FC. I might pester Donnie about some BP .45C loads if I ever get conversion cyliders for the Remingtons - or see if I can get him to load some 'warm' .44 Rem Mag loads for making BIG smoke with the 629.
Note that I'm only "looking at" SASS.... It's a timed competition; and, to me, the best part of shooting Black is that you can TAKE YOUR TIME and relax while shooting! So, if I take a couple hours to send 2 dozen or so cylinders with lead (and recreational shooting lets me load SIX chambers instead of FIVE); it's no big deal!
You'll find that like most people you will come for the guns but stay for the people. On the whole, the nicest folk you will ever spend time with.
One of the attractions is that the only competition is what you desire. If you just shoot against yourself, fine. If you shoot against your wife, fine. If you pick someone out of the crowd and make them your goal, fine. Or you can fall into the whole spirit of the thing and decide that with the proper guns and practice you can be the world champion, fine.
Our local shoot will have times recorded from 15 seconds to 115 seconds on the same stage and both shooters were having a good time doing it the way they wanted to.
