...it's the type of Kalashnikov which enables that citizen to protect both his nation and property from enemies, foreign and domestic.

Particularly the drug-smuggling kind in this instance. :scrutiny:

Saigas can be opened up at the magwell to accept AK STANDARD CAPACITY mags quite easily.
Guy probably picked it up knowing its AK underneath, but has that "hunting rifle" look to it without the mag, as to not induce hysterical cries and complaints about ranchers with AKs.

Possibly a Norinco "Hunter". Unfortunately his hand is right where I could see for sure if there was a "Galil-like" slope in the reciever forward of the magwell...

The fore-end sure looks the same.

Although, I won't give the press a hard time about this. An AK-based "sporter" with a 30 round mag is about as close to an "AK" as a (technicaly) non-AK gets, IMO.
 
That's a load of BS about the president preparing to announce a new boarder security initiative. He's the president. All he needs to do is tell the United States Army to secure the boarders, and that's what will get done, and it will be done right. That's the job of the military, i.e., to defend our nation from invasion. He doesn't need to announce any new initiative. Just tell the Army to do their job and they'll happily do it. The fact that this is not what Bush is doing tells me that the new initiative is going to be a load of BS.

That's not exactly how it's done, but the result is the same.

I think of an AK as a modern day version of a 30-30 lever action (not that there's anything particularly obsolete about a 30-30 lever action).

I imagine the Apaches would have loved to have had AK-47's ;)
