Crappy deal and now I can't carry for awhile

That seems strange. Is your local Sheriff agin' concealed carry?

I had to move a short distance 18 months ago. I just walked into the St. Louis County Sheriff office and they gave me a new one on the spot. No appointments or anything.

Constitutional Carry States

Kansans soon can carry concealed weapons without permits or training under a bill signed by Gov. Sam Brownback. Every state should be changed. http://forum.pafoa.org/showthread.php?t=275265
Five states currently have Constitutional carry:
1. Vermont – (In effect for over three decades and the state’ violent crime rate is usually the lowest in the nation)
2. Alaska 2003
3. Arizona 2010
4. Wyoming 2011
5. Arkansas 2013

Some of the other states considering constitutional carry are:
Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, West Virginia, Georgia, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Virginia.

I am glad that I have the lifetime permit here in Indiana. Probably should put this on a prepper's list that gets checked every month.

Arkansas doesn't have constitutional carry. We have a confusing stupid law that could be interpreted to mean nearly anything.

Same state, different county from the OP. We can walk in our sheriff's department unannounced and walk out with our renewed permit in 15 to 20 minutes (maybe less on a good day). A few counties to the west of me, appointments are taking up to 90 days to get. No consistency in Missouri, but I guess it is the permit holders' job to know what the pattern is in their county.

Here in MI we can carry with an expired permit and a receipt for renewal.

But we can also get them renewed months ahead of time, and they are good for 5 years.

I am still amazed that this place likes to refer to itself as being above all others when I read the comments on posts such as this. I am still confused by the number of people who think the Second Amendment reads: Congress shall make no law....... unless the weapon is concealed by a cloak....... and then the citizen shall have to grovel and beg in order to be able to protect himself. You moderators may hold the power over what is posted here but you surely have a poor understanding of the founders intents. The OP is at fault because he didn't grovel soon enough? Give me a break, or perhaps a yoke.....

That's something I am super careful about here in Missoula MT. They changed the initial application process to require a notarized character statement from 3 non-family members a few years ago. Huge PITA to ask people to go get a statement notarized.

I'm grandfathered in, but if I let it expire for even a day it is no longer a renewal.

Is there not a "GRACE PERIOD", here in my county, i used to ride it out to the last month, then renew, the nice ladies at the sheriffs office finally figured out what i was doing and HIGHLY suggested i not do it anymore, they put a little note on my file and told me they did so. We have gone to up to 5 year renewal, so i paid the fee, and went that way, but if i remember it was only like $50.00 or so. I dont think they'll grant me a 5 year grace next time, but to have to make an "appointment", naw, we walk in, plop down our old one, sign the new one and walk out, maybe 15 minutes at most if the line is long.

I would very politely call and ask to speak to the sheriff at the Green County sheriffs office and ask if you could not get in to renew sooner. He is an elected official and I am sure he wants your vote.

I applied about 2 months early Have permit in 3 weeks dated for month my permit would expire. I just put away till that month and got it out. I due that every time

You call it groveling, I call it working within the law as it stands today.

Help us work to change the laws we disagree with.

But in the meantime the OP let things slip up on him and is stuck in the middle for a short while. It might suck, but it is what it is, for now Nothing is forever. :)

The constitutionality of the renewal process wasn't commented on because it's off-topic.

What is relevant is that the OP did the equivalent of paying their credit card bill by dropping a check in the mail the day before it's due, without bothering to account for USPS transit time. It'll be late, and a whopping interest fee attached to the next one. That's neither a surprise nor unfair - it's life in the grown up world.

It is looking like repealing the CCW license in Missouri is probably going to happen. I would wait a while. (assuming the OP is in Missouri)

Well, first, it's MO, and each state has it's own unique set of laws, OK? What you do in yours might be a lot more liberal in terms of renewal.

Second, Greene County hosts the largest urban population in SW MO, with a lot of colleges. Not gun friendly.

I had exactly the same issue on my last renewal, called my office to schedule and pleaded ignorance. The system as it stands now is that they make no effort to inform you of your expiration date, it's entirely on you. Pay attention or suffer.

My understanding is that if your license expires you have to go thru another class, $100, and then submit all over again, $100. My county isn't real cheap either, it has a 1st Class rating with salaries determined by the state legislature - who set them about 40% higher than 2d Class. The reps from KC and STL apparently did it to protect themselves and force the smaller ones into line.

If you don't have a CCW, IIRC, you cannot open carry at the present time.

MO has been pretty progressive about CCW but with KC, STL, and Springfield also in the legislature it should be apparent that the pro 2A has it's work cut out to get anything thru the committees. No word at all if we will go Constitutional carry, and with our Amendment process being extremely open, it's become a third rail situation - we even passed a state constitutional amendment to budget stem cell research. Oh, yeah. NOBODY wants to be the one to actually fund it, tho.

So, it's not quite the bed of roses we sometimes make it out to be. No prior notice other than your own cognizance of the renewal date, no recognition of prior certification AFAIK, punitive scheduling ( I have never seen my local Deputy swamped for what amounts to a 5 min renewal,) no CCW no open carry.

Therefore you MUST be proactive - or throw yourself on the mercy of your local Sheriff - no, you can't go to some other county, it's 100% based on your county residence.

Them's the breaks, which reminds me I better start scheduling my next renewal in 18 months.

30 pieces of silver ....

My state has neither the lifetime CCW(great idea) or full "open carry" .
They have made many upgrades and improvements to the CCW process & system. 1000s of new gun owners-CCW license holders put $$$ into the government agency in fees/fines in the last 5-10 FYs so the bureaucracy wonks can't make excuses about budgets.
I obtained my new CCW in about 21 days. :D They even made a minor error with my e-fingerprints which was corrected quickly. It's valid 7/seven years from the date of issue too.

My state also gives license holders plenty of time to renew mandated licenses & CCW(PIs, security, recovery agents/repo, etc). It's your responsibity to maintain your current records or make any changes.
I guess I'm thankful the state & not sheriffs or some public safety official decides if private citizens get CCWs where I live.
In the state I lived in before: PA, it was thru the county sheriff but I don't recall the process or application being a huge burden. It was more annoying then anything. If I recall the whole thing cost approx $35-40.00(with ID pic, fingerprints, etc). The PA paper CCW lasted 3/three years. I think the renewal was around $17.50.

You might try Oldfluff's advice.

Also, I believe Arizona will issue a non resident permit without a background check if you are honorably discharged or active duty military. I'm pretty sure it can be processed by mail also. BTW, Missouri recognizes our permits.

And yes, in the mean time you can wear the awesome holster that came with your XD, but make sure you research all the little restrictions that surround OC, that includes state, cities, and counties. Apparently there are a host of varied issues that exist from one municipality to the next.

"Constitutional carry" rocks! I don't think I could deal with such bologna.

Two questions. How long have you been CWC and how many times have you had to draw your weapon in that time?

My point being, that a month without CWC is not the end of the world. Many of us have gone the majority of our lifetime before CWC became legal and are still alive to tell about it. Part of SD is awareness and keeping ourselves from obvious situations and scenarios that may endanger us. That should be your primary concern for the month you cannot legally carry. Best you can hope is this thread and your experience, will maybe prevent someone else from waiting till the last minute to renew.

"Best you can hope is this thread and your experience, will maybe prevent someone else from waiting till the last minute to renew."

After reading this thread, if/when we get concealed carry here I will definitely note the expiration date and make sure to renew three months ahead of time.

No do blame the county for discriminating against gun owners by deliberately refusing to provide a resonable renewal service that everone else gets to enjoy.

Otherwise is akin to saying you deserve not to eat today because you did not come early enough to the diner and wait hours to be served while everyone else gets courteous quick service in minutes because you should have known that your kind has to wait a long long time to be served.

I don't think it's our responsibility to keep mum and put while we get neglected, insulted, and disrespected for practicing and defending core american values such as the 2nd amendment.

Seems to me blaming someone for not renewing 3 months before time because of a problem he didn't know existed is like blaming the guy who just got on the freeway for not knowing the traffic was at a standstill.
