Go to the library and pick up Jan. 2013 issue of American Gunsmith Magazine. There's an article on a homemade mechanical crossbow winder.

I have a Mission XBOW-360. It looks pretty ugly, but works fantastic. Part of the kit is a rope that attaches to the string and works like a pulley, reducing the cocking effort by half. Accuracy is excellent, but the trigger could use a bit of smoothing.
