Depending on the style of crown in question, rebated, domed, stepped or dished etc. The machinist can use a variety of cutters to obtain the crown. I did a few on a mill which in fact has a lathe as one of its functions. A properly set up lathe will achieve the same results. For a rebated crown with a step we used three different cutters. I'm sure we are not far from each other with our methods.
