Quorum call (as I continue to try to move my finger back and forth 30 freaking times in 3 seconds :p)

It's terrifying to read what's going on in the Senate chamber. So many ignorant fools playing footsie with our God-given rights. Too bad most Americans know no more about guns than their senators.

Sen Reed (Democrat from Rhode Island) is talking about gun shows. Talking about how Harris and Klebold obtained a weapon at a gunshow.

He's talking about "unlicensed" dealers, I hope Craig busts him as that's illegal.

Gee why bother getting an FFL when you can just legally be an unlicensed dealer? You could be an unlicensed banker too and make extra on the loans ;)

Reed: We are debating a piece of legislation that is a serious encroachment on civil law (unsure, didn't catch end). This legislation presumes that we will govern every conceivable item of conduct. That defies human experience. That's why we have developed a standard of reasonable conduct, acting in a way that will not harms others. Gun shows are sales of weapons in public places. We became aware of one short coming of this after Columbine. The two young men were able to obtain weapons through a gun show. At that point, we moved to close the gun show loophole. If you are an FFL, you must run a check. But if you are unlicensed, you are not required to do so. It turns out there are many of these unlicensed dealers. In fact, you can go up to a table, and be told it's fine. Take the weapon, no background check. It allows the infusion of society with these weapons in a harmful way. Our amendment will close this loophole. It's very important to have a frame work for regulation of firearms in this nation, because we have avoided the standards that apply to so many other products in this nation. It's important that every dealer is required to do a background check on everyone. The ATF that gunshows are a major trafficking source, responsible for almost 30k illicit sales in 18 months. Many of these buyers are convicted felons. At least 3 suspected terrorists have tried to exploit this loophole.

Reed: 3 suspected terrorists, including 1 suspected member of Al-Qaida have used the gunshow loophole.

Unlicensed dealer, unlicensed seller...

Where do I have to sign up to be a licensed seller when I sell my car?
Where do I have to sign up to be a licensed seller when I sell my house?
Where do I have to sign up to be a licensed seller when I sell my VCR?

This guy is an idiot... Rhode Islanders, your state idiot is in the Senate! :cuss:

Unlicensed dealers make up 1/4 of gunshow dealers. If you're a felon, and know the system, and know about background checks, you go to a gunshow for an unlicensed dealer. The woman who purchased those guns for the Columbine killers testified she would have never done that if she had to go through a background check. Our legislation will require background checks where ever 75 guns or more are for sale. Lists provisions of amendments. Does a lot more than just require background checks!

Gunshow operators would not be required to notify any Fed agency of names of dealers of shows. Gunshow operators will not be required to notify AG of venue. Operators will not have to inform goers of these laws.

O goody, under this amendment we would only have a 24-hour delay once states automated 95% of their misdemeanor, felony, and restraining order records - although they can't apply for that exemption for three years.

someone ask Sen. Reed about that loophole where the bad guy goes to the trunk of the illegal gun runner's car and buys whatever he wants like lots of criminals do

Reed: 3 suspected terrorists, including 1 suspected member of Al-Qaida have used the gunshow loophole.
Not good .Maybe some one will bring up how the USPS brought LHO his rifle used to kill a president .

Talking about the buyers of some of the weapons used at Columbine: "purchaser would not have bought the guns if there were a background check".

Pity that's irrelevant: http://www.cato.org/dailys/01-10-00.html
"Although the horrible murders at Columbine High School have energized anti-gun activists, no proposed federal law would have made any difference. The adults who supplied the Columbine murder weapons (Robin Anderson and Mark Manes -- the latter a son of a longtime HCI activist) were legal purchasers."

Reed: "85% of gun owners support closing gun show loophole and 83% of those who attended gun shows support closing the loophole". President Bush supports closing the loophole.

CA requires not only background checks, but waiting periods. Yet gunshows thrive there. We are trying to end the free pass terrorists and felons have to walk out unchecked. 85% of gun owners support closing the loophole.

Know what, let them pass this.

Then let them watch as private sellers as they conduct business at their vehicles, while the "licensed dealers" run the tables inside.

Wow, it wasn't the physical location, was it?

I've got to run to class, too bad I'm going to miss Craig or some other Pro-Gunner absolutely wipe the floor with all of Reed's false statements.

The NRA maintains there is no loophole. Truth is, at thousands of gunshows each year, unlicensed dealers can sell weapons without checks. According to the NRA, hundreds of thousands of guns at gunshows are sold without a background check. The NRA also says if this legislation is adopted, gunshow will go out of business. Says states that have closed the loophole have INCREASED gunshows. NRA says background checks take too long for weekend gun shows. Over 90% of background checks takes less than 5 minutes.

I think we need to lock up all politicians who lie, call it "contempt of the people" and toss them into a jail cell... heck they could be held for 48 hours without charges, just like regular people...

TheOtherOne/Bartholomew Roberts/Frohickey/Nightfall

Here in Reno, Nevada there is many people walking around the gun shows with a firearm or two hung over their shoulder with a "For Sale" sign on it.

These are the 'unlicensed dealers, I presume, that Reed was referring to. The people are just common citizens, everyday shooters and hunters looking to get some cash for their 'older' weapon' in order to buy another one.

There is some kind of law about buying or selling more than 10 guns a month that would apply to these people. I know of one older Oriental fellow who I see at every show trying to buy these guns but he is so cheap on offering prices that most folks ignore him.

The NRA says criminals don't get guns from gunshows. According to the ATF, they do. Gunshows are the second leading source of illegal gun trafficking. Lists cases of gunshows being used for illegal weapons trafficking. Says Tennessee is a prime state for this. The NRA says that supporters of closing the loophole are exploiting terrorists fears on this issue. Lists several cases of terrorists attempting to use gunshows for their needs. The NRA says this amendment creates gunowner registration. Not true. The NRA says this amendment requires registration of sellers. Gunshow operators are only required to keep their own records of this. NRA says amendment allows for harassment of vendors. Not true. Says there are no new paperwork for unlicensed vendors.
