Man.. every time I read what you're reporting coming out of Craig's mouth I want to give a big Howard Dean style "YEEAAAAAAAAAAGH!". I better lay off the coffee today.

Reed saying that the lists arent a part of the current ammendment.
Keeps waving the "But it only takes 5 minutes! Whats wrong with a NICS check?" flag.

Umm, maybe you havent heard Sen. Reed, but "Shall not be infringed" even means for 5 min. Use your brain, or rent out the space. Just stop pretending there is something up there.

Reed: Says there is no requirement for unlicensed dealers to do NICS checks, just gun show operators. No registration, blah blah blah. NICS and amdt makes it easy to do these checks. NICS makes 91% of these checks in less than 5 minutes. What about the buying after a gun show example? Says you could still set up a sale at a later date in a private home without getting in trouble. In summary, this amdt is as sensible as any law. When you walk into a gun show, with hundreds of booths, it makes no sense why one individual has to make a NICS check, but not another. These are public events, impossible to know the background of all potential purchasers. This is exploited by criminals. A super market for unchecked weapons. Terrorists have looked at these shows as possible venues. The public demands we curtail the access terrorists have at deadly weapons.

"It makes no sense to the average person"
"The American public would demand...."

They're they go again. Some leftist elitist telling me, an 'average person', what I think. Telling me, a member of the 'American public', what I demand.

Funny how they they aren't an average person or a regular member of the American public and I am....but they know what I'm thinking.

Now Latenburg.....calling the guns "assault weapons" again. I don't think he even listens to Hatch. I don't think he is capable of listening or understanding. Understanding Hatch's points requires more gray matter than Latenburg possesses.

And, of course, he uses specific examples instead of talking about principles to push people's emotional buttons.

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people. - Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. -

We all know Latenburg has a small mind. He is showing it again, here, today.

Lautenberg: I want to say quickly that this AWB amdt held back the availabilty of AW. The AWB amdt would simply extend the AWB. Bush has voiced support. AW are intended only to kill as many people as possible in as short an amount of time as possible. Talks about Columbine. They were armed with TEC-9, killed 15 people. These AW have no place in civilized society. 1 in 5 officers killed between 98-01 were killed with AW. Even terrorists have identified our gun laws as a vulnerability. Why would we want to protect those who want assault weapons? I carried a carbine in the Army. Who would be the enemy in this case? More LEO, more kids, more office people. Ban these weapons, don't make them available in our society! Why is it necessary to protect the rights of those who would carry that lethal a weapon?!

Why should the right of those people who would own such a weapon (AW) be protected? Lautenburg

Why do these butthooks always play the Columbine card?

The Columbine guns were bought by a legal buyer at a legal show. Moron keeps flagellating a deceased equine.

What is the choice of the criminal? It is the handgun!

God, I love Craig! Although the feed is breaking up, so he's sounding like Robocop right now.

Craig: Why are we on the floor debating a law, not a proposed law? Because some years ago, we put a sun set provision in to see if it worked. Many of us said let's see if it works. That's what we're doing today. The great debate is wether we should extend it. The rational to extend it, is that it worked. That's the business of statistics. Feinstein used tracing data, I used DOJ data. What she presented is accurate, but let's put it in context. It was not intended for this debate. What is tracing data? Not all crime guns are traced. Not all gun traces are of crime weapons. For example, if you find firearms during a search, you do a trace. It is intelligence gathering tool. In 1994 there was a bubble of interest, hence a lot of traces. It tapered off, and therefore some argue AWB worked. Points out the use of these weapons are used less than 2% of crimes, same before and after AWB, according to the DOJ. If you're really talking about a basis to extend current law, and you look at this, and listen to the people saying AW are weapon of choice for criminals, that is simply not true. Feinstein said she has much LEO support. Lists some that do not. Says some LEO saw this had to do with keep citizens from owning their firearm. The choice of criminals is not packing around a rifle. Pictures have been shown about the AW. Describes function of semi-autos. Machine guns are fully automatic. Where lies the burden of proof to prove this law worked, to deny people their rights again? Less than 2% is the reason. Let's let this law expire. It didn't work, and it isn't necessary. Let's go after the criminal, that's how we protect citizens. We don't do it by denying Constitutional rights.

Craig: criminal use of semi-autos was at 2% before ban and remains same today. Proves weapon of choice argument is false.

It didn't work and isn't necessary. Let's go after the criminal that breaks the law and give the law abiding citizen back his rights!!!

Feeling love for Larry this A.M.

HOW does McCain continue to call himself a Republican and get support from the Republican Party? SHAME on the party for giving him support and money and SHAME on the citizens of his state for electing him.

McCain is up for 2 minutes, and ran out of time. Talking about gun show loophole and people who bought weapons to smuggle out of the country.

Lautenberg up now.

What's with McCain??? Going on right now about known incidents where terrorists bought guns at gun shows.

McCain: Steps up and relists the terrorists from before. We have a proven record of terrorists exploiting the gun show loop-hole. This is a serious issue. I want my fellow Senators that there is already cases of this happening, not an issue that should be dismissed.

Lautenberg: When I listen to the speeches here, and hear it said these aren't the guns of criminals... BTW, what about the two kids at Columbine? They weren't criminals before. They used AW, and we should ban these weapons. The FoP supports the ban, lists others. Let's listen to what the people are saying. Are we protecting the average citizen? We should continue this law.

NOTE: MOST police organizations, their leadership anyway, do not represent the average policeman on the street. These organizations have been taken over and politicized.

I agree bfieldburt I still can't believe that McCain is considered a Republican. I hope when he is up for reelection he gets voted out.

"The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."

Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

Craig talking about states that put their own requirements on gun shows. Talking about what stops a person from lying...or what stops a person from walking out of the show and buying off the premises away from the show. Grey areas.

Craig: The administration has asked for a clean bill. Don't change product liability, don't change tort law. We go back to old tort, that says the individual is responsible for their actions. Feinstein will certainly attempt to extend AWB. I've argued there is no clear support for this. It is argued that terrorists are using gun shows for their weapons of choice. But these terrorists WERE caught, WERE arrested. So you create a whole new hurdle for law-abiding citizens? I don't think so. And you create that grey area, where buying outside a gun show after seeing it in a gun show is a trip wire. What we have coming is first inside the gun show, then they'll be back for outside the gun show, to plug THAT loop-hole.
