• Downtime Alert

THR will be migrating to a new server today. If all goes well this should take a couple of hours where users will just see the maintenance page.

When I make the actual switchover we should see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. While the server is down I will take the opportunity to upgrade the forum software and all addons as well, so maybe an additional half-hour for the upgrades on top of the migration.

More information is available in this thread.

As always, thanks so much for your patience.

I applied for my C&R in January, received it first week of March. :D

Three days after the license arrived I got a huge envelope of BATFE regulations and a list of C&R eligible firearms. Cost my government $10.40 in postage. (could have used a flat rate USPS Priority mail box for less $$$)

One week later I got another five pound envelope of the same.

This past Saturday I get another original C&R license (same number) and today I get another five pounds of BATFE books.

Is this normal?

The C&R only cost me $30. Already BATFE has used $32.00 or so of postage.

The worst thing in all this is C& R biz not the inefficiency of the gov-reggers, that comes as little surprise...but that I have to inform my local tin badge of my intent.

Not to high-jack the thread..... But what does a Curio/Relic License allow you to do? I have read some things on it, but the 5 pounds of stuff you recieve, times 3.... Does it only allow you to buy things above a certain age or what? Can you buy, lets say a glock of current manufacture for your use and not resale???

is thAT WHAT I HAVE TO LOOK FOWARD TO I AM APPLYING FOR MY C.R. ALSO
Apparently yes.
I topped out at ten packages

With each package you probably have one or more slips of paper telling you that a certain publication is on backorder.
Instead of sending you that publication when it comes in they send you the whole package again.

No Glocks

It allows you to buy, for purposes of collecting, guns fifty years old or older (generally) directly from an importer and have them shipped to your address.
It does not allow you to resell

it allows you to buy certian weapons usualy (I believe) fifty years of age or older if I remember correctly. It does nothing for modern guns and you still need to go through 4473's and what not.

It also gives you discounts with some retailers like midwayusa and from what I hear the discount more then pays for the license.

Thanks, Joab and Lupinus....

Is easy to get?
How much documentation/paperwork is required?
Does it expire after 3 years?

A C&R hint: ask anyone you buy firearms related stuff if they have a C&R discount. I purchased spring kits from Sigarms for my P229 & P228 and THEY have a C&R discount. Ended up paying less for the two than standard price for one. :)

application is on forms provided at your request by atf. local sherrif fingerprints you and makes background check. log book of purchases and dispositions is required, and duration of liscense is 3 years, after which you reapply.

not for business, but for enhancing personal collection and maxing out your credit card. allows purchase of guns 50+ years old and some specially classified weaps from a published list. also allows direct receipt of C&R machine guns after form 4 transfer, eliminating your instate dealer. of course, C&R machine guns tend to run 8000-50000$, so...

There's no fingerprint check for a C&R. The extent of local law enforcement's involvement is the applicant sends a copy to their local police chief. If the chief has a problem with the app, they contact ATF.

To dispel a couple things.

1. No fingerprints.

2. No local LE approval. Just send a copy of the app to your local CLEO.

3. No forms when acquiring or selling C&R eligible guns, unless required by local law. But it is a transfer from one licensee to another and has to be logged in both of the licensees' log books. Some FFL01 dealers require you to fill in the forms anyway. You do have to give a copy of your C&R license to the other licensee (maybe you only have to show ??) but for interstate transfers a signed copy is the way it is done.

4. All firearms 50 years old or older are automatically C&R. The BATFE can determine that a firearm is C&R eligible that is not that old. The BATFE maintains a list on its web site of firearms it has determined are C&R eligible.

5. Once you have a C&R license, you have to log in/out any C&R eligible firearm you acquire or dispose of regardless of whether you used your license to acquire it or even if you owned it before you got the license.

6. Firearms come right to your door.

<added>
7. It is a good way to dispose of surplus funds you may have laying around. :)

They sent me a large number of those packets early this year (I amended my license when I moved). After 5 or 6 of the things, I just figured that the money the ATF was blowing in postage took away from the money that they had in the "harass lawful gun owners" fund. :D

Said it before, and I'll say it again. Most expensive $30 you'll ever spend.

I only got two complete sets of info when I got my C&R. That was four years ago though and it looks newer applicants get "Bonus" material now.

I got 2 sets of "paper weights" also. Had a typo on my license, when they sent the corrected license is when I got the second set. That was 2 months ago and nothing else has shown up on my doorstep (except for 3 rifles :D ).

sorry, maybe i am remembering a form 4 application. old age does that. have not had C&R in some years.

Two things, First it's worth the money to be able to buy old rifles and pistols directly, also it's worth the money for getting those publications (all firearms laws) Third, many major internet retailers (like midway and brownells) will allow you to sign up for a dealer account with a C&R and get a discount.

I also believe that a C&R will get you into the SHOT show in Vegas.
