After getting my Sig Scorpion Carry I just have to have another commander length 1911, but I want it in 9mm. I went to a shop to order an STI Spartan IV but they apparently have a 25 week lead time (the other distributor they checked with said he'd been waiting on guns from them for more than a year).

So what else is out there that fills this niche?

So far a Kimber Pro in 9mm is the only thing I can come up with (even though it's a 4" and not 4.25"). I'd like to keep the cost under $1,000.

The Kimber Pro Carry II in 9mm *should* just slide under that $1000 mark. Check Buds and see what their reserve price is, or go to your LGS and ask if they can order you one for $950 out the door.

I just picked up a STI Spartan IV in 9mm at Cabela's in Marysville, WA. They had 2. Well I should say last I knew they had 1.
So far it's a great shooter.

OH yeah I modded it a bit already.. Ed Brown Bob Tail, Wilson Combat flat trigger.. the sear and hammer were PERFECT. The parker in the cavity where the sear resides was a tad thick but emery paper resolved that. AND I made new grips out of Cocobolo.

I am extremely jealous. That's almost the exact setup I want. That bobtail.......rocks.

I did do the work myself. It's the Ed Brown Chain link. It comes with the new shorter spring installed ready to go. Now I didn't buy the installation jig. My buddy is a great craftsman, has a good mill, I thought, HEY, we can lay this out and drill it without the jig. We did, but after about an hour of.. OK we'll index here.. re index.. crank the table over and enough "are you sure?" we drilled the hole. I'm now thinking the jig.. would have been a good investment. :)

The STI has a cast frame and is apparent when you drill, chunky little chips, no long curls.

I was going to band saw off the corner, close to the line scribed into the parker.. I used up using a stationary band saw. I started, 80, 100, 320 then 600 grits on my 4x 36 belt sander.

As you can see, the existing hole was right there.
I sanded up to it to where I couldn't grab a finger nail on it..

I ended up blending the frame and Ed Brown tail together as a unit with the 600 grit on the non platen area of the sander.. man I had it polished SMOOTH.. umm too smooth.. I used Brownells Oxpho Blue and while not parker the color was fine. but my polished areas stood out as too smooth. I ended up sand blasting the area to get a rougher texture. In the end when you handle the gun you can tell the MSH is aftermarket and blued not parker. Same would be true with any MSH swap. Even parker comes in different colors.

I then took to making some grips from some cocobolo I have laying around from previous grip and knife handle projects.

I highly recommend this combination to anyone.. 9mm Commander, and bob tail. Good lucj finding yours. The STI you were looking for, may be worth continuing to look for. While I had it all apart for the grinding.. I inspected the sear and hammer, they looked fantastic.

Good work. Again, I think that looks great!

I'm lacking the tools for the job, but I'm really thinking of sending mine out for a bobtail job.

I just traded a Glock 17c and $300 cash for a kimber pro tactical II in 9mm and couldnt be happier. I got mine with 1 kimber mag 2 wilson and 3 cobra mags.

Well, I ended up getting a 5" RIA tactical. I had a pseudo tactical RIA in 9mm already, but I wanted to upgrade from the GI slide and safety, so I bought the new RIA tactical model and sold my old one. All in all it cost me 100 bucks to upgrade, but I did get to swap trigger parts to get the best combination before I sold the other RIA. I took it to the range today and it shoots well, and overall I'm happy with it. I figure since I already own a commander length 45 that I should have a 5" 1911 as well because hey, variety is the spice of life.
