So, here is the post I have been waiting to make!

You must remember this one? Little chopper!

Yep, a real piece of work. It was filthy and ugly when I got it. A bit of cleaning and tightening some screws made it a bit more presentable, at least I was not embarrassed when I sent it to Andy Horvath. Got it back, so here are some pictures.

What is not evident in the photographs is the action. When I sent it in, it was a smooth but extremely heavy action. I asked Andy to convert it to Double Action only and lighten it a bit. Absolutely amazing. I am decent with action work but this action is sublime. Smooth and light. If the sights go off target, you know why!

If you have questions, let me know.

One of the worst assaults on the revolver's character is "TH & WESSON". The longer barrel, thankfully, will fix that aberration.

I saw brag pictures of a pair of super deluxe conversions of common service revolvers to the cult object M&P 3" roundbutt configuration. The gunsmith had cut cunning little flats down the sides of the barrels to remove truncated roll marks. Nice looking, but I cannot guess the cost.

Andy did all the work. I supplied the rescue, barrel and cash!

If my shop were set up, I could have swapped the barrels and done the action but cutting the grooves in the backstrap and drilling and installing the McGivern gold bead, way beyond my ken. Hats off to Andy!

I'd consider a artful way to taper the barrel to remove the abbreviated roll marks. Or mill a couple flats and have something engraved.

Have you looked at the photos?

The roll marks are not abbreviated. They are off center as I had a shortened 6” barrel installed. But roll marks on some of my new S&W revolvers are off center also so that does not bother me.

Nice restore job, I love what you did on it.

Thank you.

I enjoy 4” barrel 45 ACP revolvers and have a few. This is the first one with the heavy bull barrel. It only adds a couple ounces but it shifts the balance perceptibly.

Would like to screw a 3" super heavy barrel on my Brazillian. Is there any way to tell on Brazillian contract guns if they used an old 1917 off the shelf or a new mid-30s frame on them? I prefer the shorter barrel but wonder about the strength. I use only standard loads at subsonic speeds. Preferrably 230 gr flat point or truncated cone flat point ball. Be Well, Packy.

The first batch of the Brazilian 1917s were made (predominantly) from Commercial 1917s. The second batch, after the war, was made on a cache of military frames found in storage. There is no difference in the strength of the frames.
