So this thread got me thinking today.
I was heading to the range with my neighbor and thought it might be fun to try and cut a card with my benchrest rifle. I figured the gun was capable and I had the right optics on it (NF 12-42 BR), so why not.
I took a piece of 2x4 and stapled two layers of cardboard to it and put a slice down the middle of it to hold the cards. I made spots for 3 cards and stapled a small piece of white cardboard to the back of the 2x4 to give me a backer so I would know where I was hitting.
This is what it looked like after we got done shooting. I had thrown away the backer and the guy we met there fired the round that skimmed the board.
So I set up the gun (100 yards) on the rest and bags. Fire one shot and miss just slightly right. Held a bit into the wind and WA-lah...split card.
Well hell, maybe we should just go home.
I fired a whopping 9 rounds and split 4. A gentleman next to me wanted to try it with his 308 and he had a bit more trial and error with the 3-9 optics he had on it, but came very, very close.
The card on the right was the first card I hit (on the second shot) and split completely in half.
