CVA Bobcat replacement????

I am searching for a "beginers" bp rifle for my son. He, at the ripe old age of 9 has decided that he wants to learn to shoot a ML like Dads'

We were at a local gunshop yesterday and they had a wood stocked CVA Bobcat in 50 cal. that he really liked. They were asking $100 for it and I seamed to remember that at one time you could get them for around $60-70. After a little research it looks like CVA may have discontinued them, maybe the reason for price.

Is there anyone else making a rifle that falls into this price range???

If you don't mind ugly black synthetic stocks, you can get CVA Bobcats in .50 with said ugly black synthetic stocks for a lot less than $100.

In fact, at local Wal-Marts here in Arkansas, brand new black synthetic stocked Bobcats are something like $64 before tax.

They are strictly seasonal, and sold only in anticipation of the deer season. But I saw the display racks already out last week with the prices already stickered on them. Just no rifles when I saw the racks.

me again, I was looking for a muzzleloader for my nephew a couple years ago, he was 12 at the tome. I did not want to spend a lot, I got lucky and found a cva youth hunter at a gun auction about 50 miles from home. I got it for 75.00 used, in very good cond. I did a lot of looking on the internet and could not come up with a deal like that. chuck-ia

Deer Creek (765-525-6181) lists a Traditions .50 Buckhunter Youth inline with a 12.5 inch wood stock for $109, but they're not really designed to shoot patched round balls which are definitely more fun. Will he be starting to hunt soon?
They also list a .32 Deerhunter Youth for $179.
My oldest son started muzzle loading with a Traditions Fox River Fifty Youth and loved shooting it as he grew.
$100 is a good deal for a wood stocked gun, but you might also be able to find a used gun to cut the stock down on.
BTW, did you happen to notice how heavy the trigger weight is on the CVA?

I bought a CVA Youth Hunter for my kids about 18 mo. ago. I believe it was $109. It had some problems with the lock, and the trigger pull nearly required 2 hands. I'm no gunsmith, but it was easy to disassemble and smooth off the rough edges, improving the trigger pull and lock function quite a bit. My 8 year old has used it at a couple of rendezvous, and it's pretty competitive. It likes a .490 ball in a .010" patch. 30grs of 3f is a nice, accurate, load for punching paper at 25 yds. with this gun.

BTW- I removed the rubber recoil pad to shorten the stock about 3/4", and made a flat butt plate out of a small sheet of brass.

Get those kids out shooting!

Good going DR Doug i like seeing the kids shoot at a Rendezvous , next generation Mountain Man .. hope he enjoyed it . BTW i bought one of those CVA youth side lock muzzle loaders just to have something light to put into the hands of new club members young men that want to enjoy our hobby .

I still see CVA Bobcats at Wally world.

I have one that I used to start shooting in our local
Black Powder cartridge matches: I frequently knocked
down five out of five pigs at 100 meters with patched
ball and 70gr PyroRS. I still shoot it in the muzzleloader
matches and often shoot 29 out of 30 on bullseye
targets. This gun has been fired twenty times a month,
eight months out of the year, for five years.

Not too many 59.95 guns can give you as much.
I don't care if the black plastic stock gets little dings
or scratches: it's too ugly to be hurt by it.

I think that Walmart bought out the remaining stock when CVA stopped production, and they're selling them cheaper than they were going for at Bass Pro quite a few years ago. By giving the rifle away, they help people get into the sport and create a market for all of the accessories that some of the Walmarts still sell.
I found two available at a Walmart when I was on vacation, so I bought one. I'm not even sure why I did except the price was so cheap.
Anyone interested in a brand new Bobcat?

By the way, I found the brass blade front sight on my
Bobcat was way--as in WAY--high, to allow for filing
down to suit your pet load. Some folks miss that point
on low-end ML rifles.

Thanks for all the info guys, I picked-up one from Wal-mart to give him for his birthday. It has the plastic stock, so I hope he still likes it. Putting a wood stock on it might make a good father/son project for one of these winters.

Now, I can't wait till his birthday to give it to him.

For anyone else shopping and reading this post, CVA sells refurbs on their website. I ordered a Wind River inline for $70 + $10 shipping. It was new as far as I could tell.
The page also says "Free starter kit with any gun on this page", which made it a better deal and cinched the buying decision for me. They didn't send one with mine, so I wrote them and was told the guns at the lower end are excluded fro this deal. Nothing about that on the page. Probably the last CVA I buy

I got one at a gunshow once for $60, then paid an additional $40 from CVA to get the wood stock.
Shoots great and while I want to upgrade, I don't really need to.
But I may take a look at CVA's discount page, just to look, honest.
