I decided to do my annual cleaning of my gun closet today. To my horror, I found my CZ-52 holster encased in a grey film. I suspect it to be some type of mold, but it is just a film, not looking at all like a typical mold. Upon trying to clean the stuff, I noticed a piece of paper crammed into the bottom of the holster. The paper is a white oilskin, approximately 1.25 X 4.5 inches. Written on the paper, in a baby-blue felt-tip/type ink is the name (I believe) "Vadna". The second "a" has a period directly above the letter.

Two questions:
1) Is there any hope of restoring/salvaging the holster? I don't use it at all, but would like to keep it for historical reasons. If, however, the mold is likely to spread to any of my other holsters, it's history!

2) Would "Vadna" be the name of the armorer/smith who cleaned/restored the weapon prior to shipping it to the US?

Any suggestions/insights would be appreciated.

I don't see why the holster would have to go. I bought a Yugo M48 Mauser at a pawn shop a while back and the sling had this funky greyish-green mold all over it and was cracked and starting to get seriously funky. After getting it home, I just saddle soaped the sling thoroughly and used a combination of mink oil and CampDry Beeswax waterproofer spread all over. Put in the oven on 'warm', the waterproofing stuff soaks in and keep applying more till your heart's content! Incidentally, I gave my CZ52's holster the same treatment when I got it and mine's just fine! Plus, it sheds water in the rain now! Anyway, hope this helps!

I saturated my cz-52 holster in mink oil and rubbed it in forcefully for 20 minutes and it brought a lot of life back. It should be good for another 50 years.

My cz52 holster came with what was probably the same as you describe on it (mine was like an off-white "powdery" substance, but kinda sticky).I just used a clean rag and warm water and a fair bit of elbow grease and it came out like new.then just oiled.havent seen any signs of the stuff returning.
