I was leafing through an old issue of American Rifleman and it featured a CZ semi-auto rifle that is a comercial version of the Czeck 7.62x39 military rifle. Despite some visual similarity at first glance, this thing is 100% not a Kalishnikov and not even the mags are interchangeable.

Does anyone have any experience with this rifle...seems kind of neat and different.

It's a VZ.58 and yes they're a nice rifle. I have one and enjoy it.

Last round BHO and safety location are nice differences from the AK.

If you run a search here on THR, there are several guys who've done pretty detailed reviews of their vz.58s from different manufacturers.

I've only used military issue ones, but like them -- they're a handy carbine that makes an AK or an M4 seems kind of chunky by comparison (especially with the folding stock on them). Performance wise they're solid kit, the only significant downsides on them are secondary stuff -- they don't have a big aftermarket yet, so finding mag pouches to fit the mags or scope mounts, that sort of thing, can be a trick. Not sure how things are now with the Barry-O surge in sales, but magazines used to be pretty affordable, with various deals in the 4 for $40 kind of price range.
