I'd like some input from members who own BOTH of these pistols. I am only interested in the DA/SA SP01 NOT the decocker model.
My intended use would be for range and nightstand duty.

Please detail any differences in accuracy and follow-up shooting you may have with these. Any other input welcome as well.

Thanks in advance.

p.s. Let's keep it civil!:)

I have both. My G17 is a first generation I bought about 11 years ago. My SP-01 is from the Angus Custom Shop.

These 2 are night and day different as most already know. If your intended usage is for the range, the CZ is the hands down winner in my opinion. It is ridiculously easy to shoot the CZ accurately. The G17, at least for me, takes a little more effort.

Believe it or not, the recoil forces are well distributed with the G17 and it's really a pleasure to shoot. But shoot the CZ beside the G17, and you'll find out real quick why the CZ has earned the reputation it has among shooters. I have never warmed up to the G17 ergonomics; the CZ feels like it was poured into my hand.

The G17 has tons of accessories available, the CZ not near as many. If you reload and like to shoot cheap, the CZ can shoot lead bullets, the G17 cannot. If you have short fingers, the CZ trigger reach may not be suitable, but the G17 doesn't have this problem. If you ever plan on getting a 1911, or already have one, the CZ can be carried cocked and locked, which I prefer.

Both are reliable; I feel CZ has the edge in accuracy. As a nightstand gun, either will be suitable.

Good to know. I'd like to hear from those with SP01's without any mods or trigger work.

I have a bit of experience with the G17. Very reliable, yet soulless pistol.
The CZ75B I used to have was traded off due to the trigger. The particular example I had was beyond bad. At the time I couldn't afford a $160 trigger job plus shipping.
Times have changed and I kind of miss the excellent ergos of the 75, but not the trigger.

So here I am, on the fence again. Keep the info coming guys.

Radjxf,

Sounds like you already have experience with both. I would suggest you get an SP and install the competition hammer ($60.00), which requires re-fitting of the sear or manual safety, not difficult, and there's plenty of info on how to do it.

You simply won't believe the difference.

I also own both.

The Glock 17 is a superb firearm no doubt, I really don't have anything bad to say about it, the ergonomics are actually pretty good, as is accuracy, but as you noted it doesn't really have any character. Trigger reset of the striker system is very short and passive.

The SP-01 has superior ergonomics. I've not handled a SHADOW, but that is the only thing I can think of that might be better, the SHADOW frame is very slightly different. The grip shape on the SP-01 is different (better) than the standard CZ-75B, but you may not notice unless you compare side by side. You will probably be faster with follow up shots from the CZ, the extra weight does help tame recoil and get you back on target faster. The trigger of mine was pretty good stock, but I did a trigger job. Reset of the DA/SA trigger is not as smooth as the Glock striker system. I'm not sure if you would generally even notice though unless you are looking for it. The SP-01 is a lot more flexible as far as carry options and being able to shoot any kind of bullet. I like the "second strike" capability of a DA/SA system also. Tritium night sights on the SP-01 are also nice.

Hyundai (Glock) vs. Mercedez-Benz (CZ). There is no comparison. But don't listen to me - I don't own a Glock at present. Have owned 5 or 7, but sold them all. Horrid grip angle; cheap cheesy parts; not as accurate as CZ (but what is?); poor fit. Still have and will always have the SP-01.

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming.

Here's my take from owning the 75 and G17 in the past:

G17
*100% reliable
*Good, consistent trigger (esp with red. power connector)
*Enormous aftermarket support, easy to find OE parts
*Can find one almost anywhere--cheap and plentiful!
*Ergos leave MUCH to be desired
*Good accuracy

CZ
*Not 100% reliable, I think I swapped extractor springs and did some "fluffing and buffing" of the extractor, feedramp, breech face as there were extensive tool marks, etc.
*Trigger was the big reason I got rid of the 75. One of the worst I've ever seen. Swapped hammer springs for 15lb Wolff's, with very little improvement. I'd attempt a DIY trigger job at the very least on the SP01.
*Very hard to find. Most dealers in my area have never heard of them!
**Ergos were the best amongst any "non-plastic" gun I've ever owned.
*Decent accuracy, but not much better than the Glock due to the poor trigger.

I really want to like the CZ over the Glock. I've shot 1911's a lot, don't mind the weight and like wood and steel.
I really have only one legitimate complaint about that CZ: the trigger. I've owned everything under the sun, and I'm sorry guys, but that was THE worst trigger-ever. At the time a trigger job was $160 PLUS shipping. Was going to cost exactly half what I paid for the gun!
It's funny how that one big negative sticks in my mind about that gun.
I'll do some lurking on the CZ forum and see if a guy can do a hammer swap/DIY trigger job cost effectively. I've done my own trigger work on about everything I've got, just not familiar with the CZ's guts yet.

Radjxf,

You're a discriminating shooter, which means if the trigger sucks, so does the gun. I understand. Some CZ's can have really bad trigger's; I personally do not like the creepy positive camming in a stock CZ trigger. In fact, if the comp hammer weren't an option, I would not have as many CZ's as I do. All my CZ's have the comp hammer.

Again, the comp hammer is about $60.00. As far as the reliability issue goes, get a new Mec-Gar mag. I've had some reliability issues with my SP that were mag related. Had a high spot on the original SP mag plastic follower that I sanded smooth.

I promise you, with the comp hammer, you'll have a world class shooter, and as you aptly mentioned, the accuracy potential will be extracted from the CZ with a good trigger.

There are some real experts on this forum than can guide you through it, burningsquirrels and eerw are two that I have great respect for. Hags is also top notch.

I have done it on 6 of my CZ's and the results are worth the effort. You can also go the CZ Forum for lots of info.

ITS WORTH THE EFFORT

CZs can have a ridiculous trigger with a little work.

glocks are point and shoot tools.

they are both accurate. i watch both being shot several rounds/second into bullseyes 40 yards away all week, every week. the occasional shooter will not wear either one out. i see 50k easily through many people's guns. my bone stock sp-01 runs great. my 40b has 21k rounds and climbing. some people's glocks i shoot with probably have a high of 70k rounds and have just switched barrels, but are still going.

it's like choosing between a sports car that needs a couple mods to fully shine, or a pickup truck that just runs and works great.

nice thing about the glock, is its simplicity of operation. if you want it to go bang, you pull the trigger. don't want it to go bang? finger off the trigger. no safeties to mess with, this can be good if you got a wife, or as a last resort, a kid that needs to shoot in defense.

both are great guns. just see which works best in your hand.

Hyundai (Glock) vs. Mercedez-Benz (CZ).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

What a Joke!

Now That is an accurate assessment. & I "Luv" me some pick-ups. Over 99% of humanity would get much more benefit from a pick-up truck than a sports car. Besides, you can race a pick-up truck just like you can build a race Glock, but not too many sports cars are goin' mud-boggin'...

Both guns are reliable... My P-01 is similar to the Sp-01 and has never failed me through hundreds of rounds yet. It's NATO approved, and went through vigorous testing. I like the feel of the CZ alot more.

Ive had them both in the past. Id give overall balance and accuracy to the CZ hands down. The ergo's on these is great. As far as reliability Id give the GLock the edge on that one.

Radjxf, this is not a jab at you. But I am amazed at people that buy a 1911 for $XXX, then spend substantial bucks to get it they way they want it. All of the Custom shops and specialty folks have back logs of months, some even years, whether it be Glocks, M&P's, 1911's, etc. These owners will easily spend as much as they have in the gun on mods, sometimes even more.

All a CZ needs is some trigger mods, maybe some sights, and maybe some grips.

i jsut saw what rad wrote...

rad, check out czforums.com - it's really nothing to swap a hammer, hammer spring, and use a little 400 then 800 grit to take down the sear safety leg. the difference is out of this world. if you want a hand, you can also pm me.

that's "if" they need a trigger job... our sp-01 came nice out of the box, so did the 40b i got from gzoh, and so did the p-01s my club members have and carry out of the box. sights.... depends on what you're doing. the factory ones are fine... for practical or sport shooting you may want plain black. for carry, you may want ot upgrade to tritium dots if you like, which some cz have. grips... well, everyone gets grips at some point, even glockers with those rubber band things they get lol.
