This is incredibly dumb story, so bear with me.

Two groups of guys were having airsoft battle not far from Prague.

A guy (apparently off-duty police officer) had his private concealed carry firearm with him. He lost it in the heat of the battle.

Another player found it lying in the grass. He thought it is an airsoft gun so he took it and used it - shooting another man straight in the chest.

To make it even worse the shooter was the victim's brother. The victim was airlifted to hospital and his status is unknown as of writing of this post.

They must make airsoft guns different overseas. I have airsoft guns modeled off my carry weapons and they are very easy to tell apart.

I have a Glock 19 airsoft blow back that looks and weighs same as a empty real 19 only way it looks different is if you look closely you can see the brass 6mm barrel inside of the metal faux barrel.
Field strips same as real.

There is a range not too far away that also offers paintball and airsoft games. As a paintball player I find the idea appalling. There are airsoft guns - and even paintball guns to a lesser extent in the RAP4 series - that look and feel no different than a real gun. There is no need to create an atmosphere where real and non-lethal weapons have the potential to mix.

Why was someone wearing a carry piece during a game of air soft?
Should have locked it up in his car and left it there until they were done.

Carrying it during the game seems as a recipe for disaster.

Leaving it in the car would be illegal.

Under Czech law a firearm must be at all times kept in a way that prevents theft or misuse. Cars are considered objects that are too easily broken into.

UPDATE

According to the latest info the victim should survive. He was shot close to the heart, but the bullet went straight through without causign damage other than a clean hole.

Expanding ammunition is forbidden for self defense use in the Czech Republic. Most people carry SP ammo that doesn't have sufficient speed to expand in human body when fired from a pistol, but at least deforms when it hits a wall instead of bouncing back like FMJ would.

We have the same rule here, no CC either lol.

Given the circumstances I would have left my pistol at home.

Seems like you could get a bolt in vehicle safe.
But depends on interpation of law.

I am happy it wasn't a fatal accident. Personally I would have to either leave it at home or stop playing airsoft.

Ouch...

What about other measures like unloading the gun and leaving the magazine in the car? Or even leaving a crucial part of the gun in the car like the slide. Would that be permissible?

Geez. That makes it tougher. I would likely leave the gun at home, OR keep the gun on me as required by law but leave the ammo in the car. Much like when I dry fire practice I keep real ammo in a different room or locked cabinet.

Glad to hear the victim should survive, still such a terrible tragedy for all involved.

Play paintball and always lock my carry up and if for some reason I didn't want to or couldn't lock it up I'd just leave it at home. If I had to carry for some reason I'd probably go with some sort of push button holster and figure out a thumb break as well. Way to easy to loose stuff on that field.

Legally - frame, slide and barrel are considered main parts of a gun. If apart each has to be treated as separate part of a gun. Each is registered, so you can't get away with losing them/having them stolen from car.

Rounds fall under same set of rules of storage as guns but those are not registered so leaving those in the car seems as a better option, even though it would technically be a misdemeanor.

I voted no. Czech Republic is a safe country so firearms don't need to be carried everywhere.

UPDATE

  • The victim was realeased from hospital and is regaining his health from home.
  • Firearm used was Colt 1911 .45 ACP.

It's good to hear the victim is ok. A bonus for us is that if anyone is considering non-JHP ammo he/she can be directed to this topic. It is a blessing however JHP was not present in this particular scenerio.

Sounds like some of the fools I see at my indoor range all the time. I thought you would only see that stupidity in America. Seems stupid runs in different countries as well.

At gun ranges in USA high quality bullet resistant vest is as important as ear and eye protection.

As a shooter and ex paintball player, I'm somewhat uncomfortable with the utter realistic nature of high end airsoft replicas. They look and feel exactly the same as the real deal. I just personally think that its unwise to point a replica gun at another person, airsoft OR nonfiring. Some idiots going to get shot (by a real bullet) while waving an airsoft replica around...

two years ago my daughter was doing a study abroad course in Prague. On the way to school one day someone tried to strong arm her and steal by force the wallet in her pocket. Czech republic may be a safe country generally, but there is no guarantee anywhere will be safe at all times. Luckily i have taught her some street self defense, i learned growing up, and she came out on top.
