How do y'all. I recently turned 21 and have just completed my hcp class so will be getting my hcp in short order. In the mean time I'm trying to get well equipped both physically, with weapon and holster setups, and mentally, with trigger time and tactical dissection. My question pertains to both.

My primary carry is going to be a Remington 1911 r1 and I'd like to have a BUG. I've been eyeballing a ruger p89dc because it seems a decock only would lend itself to high stress situation since the presentation would be very similar to condition 1 1911. I mean on the draw due to practice I will likely reach for the safety as I would on my r1 but instead I'll find the decocker which will still leave me on target and ready to rock. Only difference being a much heavier trigger pull all else seems equal. Before I go off spending on holsters and trigger time with the decocker only is this a solid thinking or is there something I am missing and should opt for a different method? As always apologies for long windedness.

Are you sure a BUG is even necessary for you?

For what you're most likely going to encounter (if anything should happen) you're not going to have time to transition to a BUG.

Worry about training with your 1911, get as proficient with it as you can, and call it good. A BUG isn't much help to a citizen carrying concealed.

I do agree with Bovice, that you need to worry mostly about training with the 1911, and that a BUG won't do much good for most of us.


But, since you asked, and I hate being told what I don't need, I will suggest you go for a Glock 36 or Kahr PM45. Same caliber, good triggers, light for a .45, and easy to conceal.

I suggest staying away from long DA triggers as a back up if your main carry is SA. Going from SA to DA in high stress could be problematic, but then again, I don't know personally. I am only guessing.

Necessary? Of course not and I am wise enough( despite my age) to know what is between my ears is more important than what is in my holster. But I'd prefer it because I've always liked to be over prepared.

P238 on the ankle? It has the same 1911 manual of arms (meaning SAO) and is the softest shooting "mouse gun" that I have ever shot

A P89 is not exactly a small pistol, they're noticeably thicker than a 1911. Why not just get a 1911 Commander or Officer?

If you reach for a 1911 safety that isn't there, you're not going to find the decocker, you're going to find nothing and it can cause hesitation/confusion. I hate to see you make the assumption that it will go smoothly.

I also agree about the DA first shot. If you muscle memory is not expecting a DA trigger pull, the shot can go wild. DA first shot shooting takes a lot of practice.

A BUG is just that, a Back Up (emergency) Gun and a Ruger P89 while being a good gun is not a BUG. Weight and size of two main SD guns will be just too much for CC.

Something the size of PPK, Bersa or LC9 would be better for use as a BUG.

I don't see either of these as a BUG, they are far too large, as is the P89. A back up gun should be carried in a pocket, or possibly on an ankle. Carrying a commander or officer sized 1911 as a primary is more weight than some people carry who CCW a Glock 26 with a Ruger LCP as a BUG....much less carrying it as a BUG to a full size 1911...

Agreed, but at least they're far thinner than the Ruger and have the same manual of arms.

It was pointed out to me once...if your primary gun can't do the job, your back up should be bigger, stronger, "badder". If it is smaller...its a hide out gun. I couldn't argue. I've never been shot at.

I would like to point out im a pretty large fellow at 6'3 and built like a lumberjack so concealability isnt a huge issue but it appears the consensus is I are not to smrt and this idea was let's say lacking? Oh well back to the drawing board.
