• Possible Downtime Alert

    I am working to migrate THR from the current cluster to a new one. I would like to get this done before the weekend, but it's unclear what the timeframe will be, as testing is still ongoing. As I am writing this the new (rebuilt) host is doing a burn-in to ensure that everything will keep running under load.

    When the migration happens users will see a Cloudflare message indicatating it cannot connect to the server. This is expected, and depending on how the migration goes this may last from 30 minutes to 3 hours - I won't know more until testing the various migration options is complete and I have finalized the plan.

    More information is available in this thread.

    As always, thanks so much for your patience.

DA/SA CCW Options

I'm thinking about moving away from the striker fire pistols for CCW. That being said, I've stuck this long with them because I don't like carrying pistols with manual safeties. Now I'm considering finding a DA/SA option in the compact to sub-compact size. I'm a huge fan of the Beretta 92 but that's a big hunk of metal to log around.

What are my options?

There's the Beretta 92 Compact. You can choose the decocker only G version if you don't like safeties.
Other options as decocker only are:
Walther P99 AS (used);
Heckler & Koch P2000 V3 and P2000SK V3;
Heckler & Koch P30 V3 and P30SK V3;
CZ P01 or PCR or 75D Compact;
Beretta Px4 Compact G.

Other compact (not so compact) options are:
SIG-Sauer P229
SIG-Sauer SP2022 (used?)
Ruger P95DC (used)

I recently acquired an Sig Sauer P229 M11A1. I sold off the last of my Glocks, but did keep my Ruger RXM. I discovered I liked it better than my Glocks.

Anyway, the one thing I learned was getting used to the DA/SA trigger on my P229 is taking me a little longer than I thought it would, but I am fairly dialed in now. Mine has the short reset trigger (SRT) and I would always start target pre active in DA then from there it was single action. I found that I kept treating the trigger as if it was my old Glock triggers. Bang, full release, lots of take up, bang, full release, lots of take up and so on.
Thankfully I have cleared that hurdle.
After shooting Glocks for 20 years it was strange to change, but I have done it.

So far I have just under 300 rounds through my Sig. I am very happy with it and it is accurate in my hands so I think I have the sights and the ammo figured out.
I think in another 200 rounds it will be my primary carry gun.
So far not one malfunction, but I want to be sure.

Good luck in whatever you decide. :thumbup:

I am also in the process of getting an Sig P229 Mk25.

I'll add the CZ P07 or P09C Nocturn. These have the option to swap to either a safety or decocker.

I like the PX4 Storm Sub compact in .40S&W. It’s just a tad thick in the grip compared to single stacks but carries well. The extra width does help control the .40 recoil. The sub-compact does not have the rotating barrel of the larger models.

Watch is for scale comparison.

Standard capacity magazine:

14 round magazine inserted. Note: there’s a little play fore/aft. I’ve shot it with it in all positions and had no malfunctions.

I knew someone who carried a CZ RAMI for a while. It's a small outline, but a chonky boy. Sort of like HK "subcompacts". They replaced the RAMI with a Hellcat, which is much lighter.

How much do you want to spend? I recommend BUL Armory Ultralight 3.25” and even the Springfield Prodigy Compact 3.5”.

The BUL runs around $1800 and the Compact Prodigy can be found for under $1200. If you want to spend a little more then a DWX Compact 4”. All of these are SA.

A CZ Shadow 2 Compact which I’ve only handled in the shop can be had for around $1200 and is DA/SA and the DA is fairly nice. I’m not a huge DA/SA fan so I’d just buy the SA and go cocked and locked.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a better compact da/sa 9mm than a cz p01/pcr imho. In 40 s&w or my personal favorite 357 sig you’ll be hard pressed to find better than a sig p229. I’m also a huge fan of the Walther p99. It’s striker fired but it’s also da/sa.

I recently made the switch from striker fired to DA/SA. I now have 3 CZs. PCR and P07 for carry and SP01 Tactical with light for home night stand gun. All 3 have decockers, as I dislike safeties. It did not take long to make the switch as I am very familiar with DA/SA from my former Sig ownership days. CZs are fantastic and simple to upgrade sights, triggers etc., if one so desires.

This thread surprised me. I thought I was the only one wanting to go from striker fired to a DA/SA type of handgun. Though I haven’t fully abandoned striker fired guns. I have an RXM and I tend to pick up an Sig P365.
In addition to my Sig Sauer P229 M11A1 my dealer let me know yesterday that he found me a brand new Sig P226 Mk25. I should have it by Friday. I am pretty jazzed about that.

There are lots of polymer-framed CZ75 compact clones out there. They're my favorite DA/SA for carry. They have lots of different names. The giveaway is the rails running inside of the frame.

This one cost $225 or something like that.

The Kahrs aren't DA/SA, but they have a long smooth trigger pull like a revolver. They're my preferred carry semiauto because I'm used to that kind of trigger and see it as a safety feature.

I have to get my hands on some of these to try the triggers and feel the weight. The more I shoot, the further I'm repulsed by the striker fired pistols. For work, I have no choice but to continue using/carrying Glocks and Sigs. But going forward, I'll be adding one or two of the ones suggested here.

Thanks everybody.
