Dad needs advice

No its not me that needs advice at the moment but it is my own dad. He has lately been considering getting a conceled weapons liscense. Now don't get me wrong here I am a full supporter of CC but dad is a little nervous. He is 62 years old and is wondering if age could cause more danger to himself or the people around him. He is not a danger to any one he is just afraid of being dis armed and the weapon being used against him. I tell him that it is nonsense. He still works as a electracian and is in great shape. I believe that he has what it takes to get his CDW permit but as I said he is doughting himself. Of course through my child hood he was in the military and in vietnam for 4 years and I told him that if he made it back alive from nam that he could surely carry a weapon that he only knows about and use it safely with out the fear of being disarmed. That gave him some food of thought to chew over. I think that I can win him over but I need some new material. So please if you can help me convince him that he is fit to carry please help.

Get him a nice 1911 and sign him up for a class. I am sure he will do fine. Let him take the class and ease back into it. And take the class with him, it is a good chance to bond as well as spend time with him.

I will be 63 the end of the month and have had my license over ten years now. Remind him he does not have to have gun on him at all times, just when he thinks it could be beneficial. Here in Texas it made us legal for car carry until law finally changed last year allowing vehicle carry by anyone.

I have friends in their 70s and if I were a bad guy, I would not tangle with them. There is a story in THR (last month) about a little old lady who stoped a punk from burglary.

If a little old lady can stop a 17 year old punk in his tracks your dad would have no problem if he needed to defend himself or some one else.

One thing to consider, which I'm especially concerned about when it comes to my pops...how's his medical condition?

My dad has asthema, arthritis plus a bad leg. Not sure if the loudness may give him an attach or him having a hard time to grip the gun or making it up to the hill at a BLM. I'm grateful to have a sister in law that's in the medical field that looks after him.

I would imagine if he thinks he couldn't keep from being disarmed then he also thinks he couldn't defend himself without a gun. And if he thinks he can defend himself without a gun then he wouldn't have a problem with being disarmed.

Tell him there are two options:
1: Don't carry a gun and have to fight someone off by hand.
2: Carry a gun and have a slight chance of being disarmed but a much larger chance of successfuly defending himself.

Ask him which situation he would feel more secure with. He is right, carrying a gun is not a 100% guarantee of being completely safe. It does offer a much larger chance of defending himself than only his bare hands.

And if he ends up deciding not to carry then keep trying and at least get him some pepper spray or something.

Ok, as to age, Not an issue! I was 65 when I bought my first handgun in over 40 years. I practiced with it, then took the concealed carry course, passed it, got permit. Not enough so I went back for training, Advanced Concealed Carry a 10 hr course. Next month I am taking an Advanced Tactical course.

I am also now active with KC3, in the state of Kentucky for more changes in the concealed carry laws. It is never too late to start! I am now 67 by the way.

Just the thought that he has concerns, is evident to the fact that he CAN handle it.........
Get a class go with him if you can, But let the instructor teach him.
