Hi, new guy here, looking for some guidance.

I've spent a fair amount of time with pistols and shotguns, but I've been looking for an inexpensive bolt rifle for deer. I walked into the nearby Bass Pro yesterday, thinking about the Marlin XL7 in either .270 or .30-06, and was checking one out when a sales guy passed by and said, 'I've got the deal for you.'

He handed me a Winchester M70 Shadow in .300 wsm. 'Last one we have,' he says, and it's marked down from $479.99 to $299.99, or 20 bucks more than the Marlin. He talks it up and I take it.

I know some people love the Model 70. I don't know much about it, and I knew nothing about the .300 wsm. I did notice there weren't many choices for it in the ammo aisle, though.

Bottom line -- was this a good choice, or something I might regret down the line? It's still taped up in the box. I'm thinking of taking it back and exchanging for something in .270 or 30-60.

Any thoughts?

yes, you got a good deal. you should have no problem finding ammo, at least at home. just do not forget your ammo at home. my brother did that a few years ago with his 300 H&H mag. he had to drive 90 miles back home to get it! your ammo will not be that hard to find, but not every hardware or gun shop will have it. that is one great big plus for the 30-06. you can find it everyplace except the local grocery store, and still find it at some of them!
