i enjoyed the article, but find the writer's assumption the the more virulent anti-gun people are truly interested in discussion/debate/or even conversation is at best unlikely and is disingenuous. the feinstein/bloomberg types do not want to talk about gun policy at all. their only interest is in taking all they can from the second amendment rights as fast as they can and for as long as they can. it is not possible to talk with people who will lie, cheat, and steal to get what they want. we have to recognize that there really are few liberals like the writer to be found.

Right on. The NRA needs to continue to recruit a broad brush. Gay, straight, women, men, teenagers, high-IQ dogs, you name it. Lets get a large tent where everyone has room. Remember, whether you are left, or right, gun rights are HUMAN RIGHTS, if properly understood.

Ironically, the point of the blog was the exact opposite.

Gun policy is not really as partisan a debate as mainstream media would suggest. There are plenty of left-leaning citizens and Democratic voters who love our guns...You cannot pretend that we don’t exist...

Making gun rights a partisan issue doesn't do anything except alienate potential supporters.

Bingo! A third is technically a fraction, but 30%+ is nothing to sneeze at. If we had a 30%+ increase in active 2A supporters we would never hear the words "gun control" ever, ever, again.

Just a point of interest: I have spent my whole life around academic institutions where the general populace skews slightly to the left of Susan Sarandon and Alan Alda. Aside from my friends in LE and .MIL, and the folks I've met specifically through shooting/training, most of my social network is pretty darn liberal as a result of environment. (I'm basically skewing slightly left and *overtly* libertarian whenever I take some sort of test, myself).

I know a ton of waaaaay lefties who own guns. And not just Fudd guns, but ARs and XDs; the blacker, the better. One of my favorite shooting buddies has a left wing talk show, for pete's sake (though he's pro2A on the show; can't defend civil rights with a sharp piece of wood very well). Believe it or not, western state universities are filled with gun owners, and they are largely voters, and affluent enough to donate. (They can also read well, which is why if we put the stats on guns, crime, violence and control in front of them enough times, they will eventually form the rational opinion-we've seen a bit of that phenomenon in the MSM, thanks in parts to idiots like Piers on the other side).

Now, this is not to be confused with--or be read as an endorsement of--the democratic party platform, in any way shape or form, of course.

But since when has either party done a particularly good job of representing their constituents, save for a few examples of when the politico's own self interests happen to intersect with the people's?

Point is, stand together, or hang separately.

/end of a very rare political rant from this member. Back to 9mm vs. .45 ammo availability...

    Meanwhile, I read this

    A comment on momsdemandaction.org
"Maybe – maybe (I don’t think it’s all that clear) – the Second A gives people the right to have as many guns as they want. But the rest of us (80% of Americans who don’t own guns) have an absolute right to safety, and freedom from gun violence. Our government’s #1 obligation is to keep it’s citizens – especially the most vulnerable – safe.

I would advocate putting a very large tax on bullets – like $1-2+ each; one of the problems is that bullets are so incredibly cheap (many are ~ $.05) and use the $$ to fund anti-gun campaigns, and background checks, etc. License PEOPLE, not just guns – if you have to have a license to drive car, shouldn’t you have to have a license to buy a gun? work on the finger print technology to “password-protect” guns – technology that makes it impossible for anyone to shoot a gun whose fingerprint isn’t set as the “password.”

Finally, I think we all need to be very careful about the mental health piece – the gun nuts like to blame gun violence on the mentally ill – but only 5% of mentally ill people ever commit a crime. I would like to see increased funding for mental health – we just need to be careful & truthful about it, and not make it seem like gun violence is caused by mental illness. It’s not.

Good luck with your good work!"
My head is spinning from all that

gun violence may not be caused by mental illness, but comments like that very well may be.

Blog author of the above article on hour 3 of Tom Gresham's Gun Talk this week.

Haven't heard it yet, since as I type this I'm only 10 minutes into hour 2.

I also see Massad Ayoob steers readers to the original blog in his e-mail / Backwoods Home article.

Listening to Bob Costas talk on the Maher video made me throw up in my mouth. What an arrogant tool.

I think that IS the point. :)

BTW I totally agree about Costas. Arrogant, leftist humps like him dominate the tv airwaves far too much. We should do more to demand a different atmosphere because he is mostly on BROADCAST tv which is subject to FCC regulations on certain things. Serving the whole community is one of those things and he certainly does not do that. Most tv types don't in fact.

I like seeing this but also see it as part of the problem.

Examples like this are the things that make it acceptable for gun owners to vote D. Yeah there are fanatics over there who believe in a gun free utopia but there are also people like this. The issue is only brought up by the fanatics and promptly dismissed. Then something happens and you get Colorado...
