Dedicated Amazon Box Knife

I’ve carried a knife daily going on about 25-30 years once clips became a thing. Disliked having a Buck folder laying at the bottom of a Levi’s pocket. Most were in the disposable price range.

I branched out into Benchmade’s in the late 2000’s but after losing a couple I stopped carrying them as daylies. They’re at the apex of the price range in knives for what I can justify for my needs.

Anyway….with the advent of Amazon it’s now at a point where their boxes arrive at a non-stop pace at casa de Frulk. At that rate they fill up the garbage pretty quick.

I ended up buying a knife for the specific purpose of cutting down cardboard boxes. Sits on the microwave until needed.

The Gerber on top is my daily carry. $36.99 isn’t bad for a knife that is 100% Made in the USA (packaging does not say sourced with global parts). I used it for a while doing the box cutting. But I found I wasn’t sharpening it as required and when I was using it for other tasks it was somewhat dull at the time I needed it.

I know the fix is just to break out the Lansky and sharpen as needed but then I wouldn’t have justification to buy a DEDICATED cardboard box knife.

I looked around and settled on this Buck. Price was around $40. Lockwork as of now after moderate use has no sideways play in it. I like the razor style as it works great for me when cutting at the angle I use on the trailer. Blade is easy & straightforward to sharpen. Texture on handles is ‘gritty’ and very sandpaper like providing a positive grip. Downside is it’s made in China.

I cut the boxes down on a flatbed trailer. Height is convenient at almost mid-thigh and when cutting through I hit wood instead of formica or a metal top.

The Buck made short work of these two boxes.

Anybody else have a DEDICATED Amazon box knife?

I have an old Ek Pig Sticker in the kitchen drawer that I keep sharp for any sort of need. I don't cut the cardboard itself, just the tape and fold them flat for recycle.

I have three of these. One in the garage tool box, one in the kitchen knife drawer, and one in my pocket. I don't feel guilty when I use the blade to gnaw on things and it only takes me about 2 minutes to put a razor edge on it.

One of the suppliers sent packages with boxes from Uline. They cut differently so IDK what Amazon and or Uline is sourcing their cardboard from. The heavier Uline stuff I use for test cuts to gauge edge holding.

My daily everything knife is a Ontario Rat 1 .... I use it for everything, cutting boxes, hunting, fishing, literally everything.

I've even used it to eat cheesecake with.

I mean, if I'm being honest, pretty much all of my knives are basically Amazon knives. 🤣 I feel like that's 90% of the work my knives do is opening the boxes.

Lately my go to has been my Reate Exo U. It's a gravity utility knife.

As far as breaking them down, I was using my Gerber Sedulo pretty regularly but it's gotten dull and I haven't had a chance to sharpen it.

I think my Spyderco Sage 5 in Maxamet may become the new box-breaker-downer with its insane edge retention.

I can get hundreds of packages where I work at. A Husky folder that uses pop out utiility blades is all I am technically allowed to carry. It works fine for that job.

I generally just chunk them in the incinerator but even if I break them down, I don't actually cut the cardboard like this.

I just cut the tape and get them flat and incinerate them all on their sides for a complete burn.

Ya, as long as they're small enough I usually just do that. Bigger boxes like stuff for furniture and appliances and stuff like that are usually the only thing I break down. Speaking if which, I need to break some of those down...

I have several Morakniv's laying around from grabbing them here and there at various gun shows. I usually just reach for one of those...

The replaceable box-cutter blade style folders work well also.

My Amazon/Uline/Midway knife is a fixed blade Kline Skinning Knife. Skinning as in wire insulation not game animals! Uline has kind of fallen to the side since I moved and pretty much got my new loading room furnished. Amazon and Midway are still holding their own! :)

Our city furnaces a separate trash can for recycling and breaking the boxes down is not required but they only empty them every 2 weeks so breaking down the boxes saves some needed space.

Though I open a lot of boxes, I am not in the box opening business.
I carry an all occasion sharp Spyderco Endura 4.

I have some of these around for letter and box opening.

My wife likes to carry one in her purse, it's easy to pass off, if anyone ever asks.
