Deer hunting Unit 42 Idaho

Hello everyone I am new to the borad so don't beat me up to bad, When I ask this. I just got the late big buck tag for unit 42 in Idaho. Never really been out there. Was just looking for info on the area. The hunt starts on Nov. 1-24. Can I even get back there that time of year? I know Caldwell ID dose not get good snow until Dec. Will the bucks be high or will they be down low. Or should I fine a high spot and just glass becuase the rut will be going and I will just see them running around? Any info or ideas will help.

42: is that the small unit that's a strip from Freezeout, through Emmett and up north of there a bit?

Just found the map. It's the far SW corner of the state.

Got an antelope tag for 40, but not all the way down in 42.

Unless Idaho F&G have changed the unit numbers in the last couple of years unit # 42 is in the south west corner of the state. the west of #42 borders against the socialist republic of Oregon and the south borders against Nevada.

Benellimonte Thank you for the info. When you hunted it were the bucks hight or low? was the rut on or off. It is a November hunt so will there be lots of snow sould I just stay in the small mountin range or should I look out on the plains? Sorry of all the questions just don't want this tag to go to waist.

was in 40 in 2006 with my bow for prongs lots of them just go on to TOPO.com and fine about three good water wholes and you should do good.

Captain, I would assume the bucks will be in rut seeings November is the "rut" month for deer. I would try to hunt as close to the northern boundary of unit 42. The reason being is unit 40 is a historically good unit for trophy class bucks with a subsequent larger number of deer & hunters. The hunters may move some deer out from the southern edge of unit 40 into unit 42. Keep in mind the habitat in unit 42 is not as good as for deer as it is in 40. Try to find pockets of cover/food i.e juniper, aspen, mountain mahogany etc. I would call Idaho F&G and ask if there are any "Access Yes" ranches or land in unit 42. That would be another option for places to hunt around. Curious as to what gun and caliber you will be using?

Thanks again Benellimonte I will take your commits and but them to use in november thank you. As far as Access Yes for unit 42 F&G said there is none. Sounds like I should of put in for unit 40. I will be using a 7mm Rem mag. I shoot the 150gr Rem seroccio bullet sorry on the spelling I hope you know which bullet. it has done well for me and I have been shooting out to 300-350 yards very well. I ll also take my 300 ulta Mag as a back up gun. I took a nice 3x4 last year with my 7mm at 280yards nice buck but no speard.

Cpt. I was lucky enough to draw that hunt as well this year. I can tell you anything is possiable for weather that time of year and as far as the best place to hunt it will be the Owyhee cayon brakes area. I have horses and will be takeing them in but if you have to go in by vehicle plan on doing a lot of walking and scoping. You have the opertunity of a life time for a big buck and I mean 200 pluss muley. I have even see 40+ inch racks on several occasions but they are in some tough country. Also make sure you have a rifle you can reach out with and do not be suprised to have to take a 400 yard shot. Make sure you practice and are cofindent in you rifle and scope. You will also need a real good spoting scope. Keep an eye on the weather at all times you are out as it can and will change fast. I have seen it 65 at 10 in the morning and a northern blow in and it be 5 above at 1600 that afternoon. I would offer to meet you and take your out scouting but I am working here in Iraq and will be home about the 14th of November and going out at that time. I have rode horses all over that country and only wish I was home now to do some scouting before then but will have to depend on previous year scouting. Thanks Cowboy I tried sending you a PM but I don't think it went through. I was just wondering what are you calling the cayon Brakes? Is it from the owyhee river and east, to like red canyon, white cow basin and dickshooter rd. Or is it Juniper MT. south, to like bald mountain and dukes creek. Thanks again, Oh and I pulled my Ballistics for my 7mm rem mag and have them out to 500yards.

Unit 42

My son and I were also fortunate to draw Unit 42 a few years ago. Had a great hunt! Both of us took nice 4 points in the first three days of the season.

We arrived about 4 days before the season opened to scout. Didn't see anything but the rearend of one deer the first two days. Called fish and game and they suggested to look high in the snow but we finally found them lower. Our impression waa that they seemed to be congregated and moving already.

Suggest arriving early before the season to scout. Saw some very, very large bucks scouting, much bigger than the ones we took but just couldn't pass up the ones we finally took. We did pass up several 4 points before we finally took our bucks.

We did run into other hunters that had not found much, one took a fork horn but they arrived opening day.

My 15 year old son and myself have drawn the owyhee archery tag- We'll be hunting bright and early the morning of August 15. I plan on concentrating on unit 40 (the hunt is all of units 40, 41, and 42) and I'll be scouting over the next few weeks to try and find a few biggun's in their summer range. I would certainly appreciate any hints anyone might be able to give us, as general or specific as you're comfortable with- I'd just like to get my boy into some good deer. He killed a whitetail doe a couple years ago, but I'd like him to get close to some horns. Please email or PM if you'd like to give us a little help-

Contact BLM and F&G and find out where the water is for small springs off the beaten path in the area you want to hunt. Then do a lot of glass work. Just wish I could be there too.

i hunt in unit 40 for deer and i think it is close to that
by reynolds creek and silver city area.
it is a dice roll if they will be high or low.
if there is alot of snow up top they will be lower
i would say look around, who knows what the weather is gonna be like after that snowstorm last year in my unit.
start at the top and work your way down.
thats what i do.
