I believe the simplest solution is often the best so my question is what do you consider the most basic, no-brainer carry gun? What is the Honda Civic of pistols? If this was a communist country and they sold only one CCW pistol, what would it be? What is the first gun that would come to mind if you had to recommend one for someone who understands guns but is not particularly interested in them.
 
The first one to pop into my head is the makarov, but on further reflection I'd change that to a taurus 85. Simple, and reliable. You could probably even have 'Honda Civic' written on the side.
 
I don't believe the "no identity carry issued" handgun would be the Makarov, that's a bit obscure now. I think it's a no brainer right here, Glock...the Bic pen of guns.

One one possible answer - even though I don't like them - Glock.

As I say, I don't like shooting the ones I have shot, but as far a pure functionality/reliability, they own the market.

I like revolvers, but they are niche weapons at this point in time. Don't get me wrong, I like my Blackhawk better than any other handgun I have shot, but time has moved on from revolvers.

And if the purpose was a CCW. I would certainly recommend a sp101 .357mag with a 2 inch barrel. You could use either .38s or .357s giving it more flexibility for a wider range of people. Revolvers are generally easier to learn on. They are the original point and click interface despite what the Glock people would have you believe. Simpler to operate in general.

Probably more of those actually being carried than everything else put together. Everybody has one, or knows someone who has one.
 
S&W J-Frame in 38 Special (or the 357 Magnum version). A close second would be the Glock 19 or similar.
 
Makarov, Glock.

Well, for those of us comfortable with autos, the Mak is pretty solid - being a proven military design. I have an East German copy converted to .380, and have been pleasantly surprised at how well it shoots - both accuracy and reliabilitiy. I don't much like the round itself, but if it has to go in your pocket, reliability is worth something. I have a Kel-tec P40 which I bought for that purpose, but had a mechanical failure (slide release BROKE :what:) so I'm not sure how much faith to put in it.

The Glock fits into the same category - reliable, easy to operate. I don't have any of the compact models, but have had a P17 and P35 for years, and wouldn't hesitate to carry a downsized version.

For lots of people, the archtypical snubbie in .357 or .38 with +P Corbons or the like fill the bill. Some folks just don't practice much, and though I'm not sure I want THOSE people :scrutiny: carrying... a Colt Agent or S&W M36 is fairly idiot proof.
 
There is no one size fitzall ccw weapon.
A one hundred pound female who never practices at all is better off with a revolver in something like 38spl or even a smaller caliber.

A 200lb man who practices every chance he gets may be comfortable with an HK full size 45acp or a thunder ranch 44 revolver.

If I had to venture a guess as to the "all around" single choice pistol it would be something in an underpowered round in a mid size easy to handle pistol or revolver like 9 X 19 or even 9 X 18 but like all compromises, you lose something to gain something.
