defusing "gun nut" comments

I walked in on several engineers at work in the middle of a gun conversation one day and when things got comfortable I mentioned they should try the ccw and defense courses like Farnum gives. Of course this lead to revealing that I have a permit to carry. There was a mini debate that was pretty equally divided in the room. I ended up with one of the non gun owners in my back yard going over safe handling practices and then knocking holes in paper with my XD45.....

two weeks later he bought the thing off me. :banghead:

TinyGnat, I thought -you- said "wingnut" <grin> har har har.

Seriously though, I wish you'd been there for the conversation. You'd have had to pick your jaw up off the floor. (Then you'd have been rolling when you saw their reaction to my statement). It was at "Lobby Day" in Richmond.

Some guy made a "Gun Crazed Psycho" comment about me the other day... I shot him in the kneecap and just walked away... no sense in letting people like that ruin your day...

lol

On a more serious note, I have had people ask me questions about why I need firearms. I usually break it down for the person right there. I normally explain how I am not paranoid, UFO hunters are paranoid, they guy that gets ready for a zombie invasion is paranoid. Crime is real and it hit home a couple of years ago with my nineteen year old sister being murdered. I was already an avid hunter and sportsman but never owned a handgun. As soon as I hit 21 I went out and purchased one because I no longer believe in the "It won't happen to me". Plus the fact that the police cannot protect you. After all, when was the last time you heard of a police officer diving in front of a bullet to save a civilians life? It just doesn't happen. They do their best but they cannot protect everyone.

I then explain how I hope and I pray that I never have to use a firearm in any fashion against another human being and that I don't even know if I am prepared to handle the backlash after such a situation but I will not let that stop me from being prepared to save my life, the lives of my family, the lives of my friends or an innocent person if the situation were to ever arise.

they guy that gets ready for a zombie invasion is paranoid.

When the undead hordes rise, you'll regret that! Just because im paranoid doesnt mean the dead wont leave their graves and hunt the living!

"Because I have loved ones in my life worth protecting."

I remember my Dad saying over the years that there is nothing more importent in his life than protecting his children.

I rescently was able to take my daughter's friend's father shooting for the first time in his life. He's a constitutional lawyer. He liked exercising his 2nd amendment right!

I firmly/calmly explain to people...I own expensive Target Pistols. They are kept in a safe....taken to an indoor range and used with extreme care & caution. Safety first. I go on to tell how much fun it is and would you like to try it sometime. It's an immediate yes or no at that point.
One person jumped down my throat and replied....There are no reasons for guns to be around and I don't need a Target gun and so on.....The NRA this & that...blah blah.
I end the conversation with I hope you never need a gun to protect yourself or your family....if you ever want to go to the range sometime let me know.

I correct people all the time. When they call me a "gun nut" I turn on them and scream, "THE ACCEPTED TERM IS 'GUN PSYCHOPATH!!!'"

How do you respond when gun owners describe themselves as "nuts" and seem to think it's cute?
How often do you hear, for example, rap artists refer to each other as "*******?"

Sometimes, it matters who the speaker is. The same words can be a term of endearment or an insult, depending upon the intent of the speaker.

Sounds too apologetic to me.

*execpting an SD situation of course--i just knew somebody would make a smart comment about "if they ain't dangerous why use 'em"
I don't consider using a gun in SD dangerous...I'd say the situation is dangerous because your life is being threatened, but it's not the gun that's dangerous.

Guns are only dangerous when the 4 rules are broken (and one could argue it's the person who is being dangerous) but in a SD situation, the one rule of not pointing the gun at anything you're not willing to destroy...I'd be willing to say in a SD situation, if you have a gun you damn well better be willing to destroy the person attacking you.

I usually find that if you talk about sport or another hobby people call you an ‘enthusiast’ but if you mention you shoot guns you’re called a ‘nut’ – but then small minded people make small minded comments.

Out of interest … what percentage of Americans doesn’t actually like guns? – I know it won’t be a scientific answer but what would a ball-park figure be?

(I’m on my lunch-break at the moment browsing this great site … bored … the sun is shining and I’ve decided to take the afternoon off and give my Winchester 1894 Trails-End a good work out at the range – happy days!)

I do not have to defend my United States Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

thank you kindly!
