Democrats are a third party in Texas Governor's race

Just heard this morning that the Texas governor's race is heating up.. the leader in fundraising is Republican incumbent Rick Perry. However, the next highest fundraiser is former Republican Comptroller (now Independent) Carol Strayhorn. The next is also an independent - musician/pundit Kinky Friedman's campaign has raised twice as much as both Democrat candidates combined ($3 million).

Looks like third parties may have a good chance this election to actually make a difference in the process beyond playing the spoiler role.

Ive seen Strayhorn's TV commercials and website and she looks pretty good. I e-mailed to ask her stance on two issues and haven't yet heard back so I'm still waiting to hear where she stands on border and gun control.

Kinky sounds pretty good so far too. I think out of the candidates he is the most conservative.

Perry will not get my vote after his comments on the border and his support for that trans Texas corridor.

I cetainly haven't made up my mind yet, these are just my thoughts/opinions so far. YMMV

Well I don't know about border control; but Strayhorn won the TSRA endorsement for comptroller every year she ran. I am hearing that TSRA will either endorse Perry or issue no endorsement for this election though.

I'm kind of favoring Kinky myself right now; though I am pretty uninformed on the subject still.

The run down

As the governor canadates go, Strayhorn has done a pretty good job of watching over the states purse strings as Comtroller. Chris Bell would not get my vote even if he was the only canadate after he back stabbed Houstonians and supported Brown for mayor for his own personal gains. Rick Perry cannot get a state school finance plan through the state house. Also, he has shown no concern for any disaster relief plan for Texas after witnessing the La. fiasco of Katrina. I like Kinky's attitude with 'Why the hell not', but still has to many questions. The other Demo canadate is really an unknown in my books.

It is early but I feel Stayhorn is the better pick.

They are just pulling the wool over everyone's eyes. Strayhorn knew she could not win a primary against Perry so she is running as an I. Essentially we have Republican vs. Republican, not really 'third party'.

Perry, but it sure won't be with my vote. I haven't made up my mind between Kinky or Strayhorn yet.

Actually they both used to be Democrats and its very ironic that the Democrats who used to control every part of Texas now are behind the independent who is behind the independent . Perry will win it quite easily though, Strayhorn going Indy lets her squak to the media for a while longer.

Carol's father was (at one time) Dean of the UT law school, just for trivial info. She was the mayor of Austin at one time and did well in dealing with the Yahoos on the City Council. She probably has the better handle on the school finance issue, compared to Perry.

The Kinkster is a fun guy and I'll drink beer with him all night long, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of running any level of government, he doesn't have a clue. I heard him talk about school finance, and there, also, he's clueless. All I gotta do is hear, "...self esteem..." and it's city.

weak in our State government.

I met Rick Perry once. Seemed a nice guy. Took the time to pose for a picture with the law enforcement guys around and chat with us like a good old boy. He got off the government plane in his socks and no tie.

A governor that can take his boots off when he travels and will spend time with the troops protecting him when he gets there will get my vote. Our former governor was the same way.

For what it's worth, Gov. Perry spoke at the NRA convention in Houston in '05 He seems firmly behind RKBA.
If he'd narrow down the list of off-limits areas for ccw, he'd be guaranteed my vote. I don't forsee that in the future, tho. I work in a hospital, so that pretty much renders my ccw ineffective.
Whenever I see/hear Strahorn, I can't get Ann Richards out of my head. I know it may not be rational, but I'll vote for Perry this go'round.

I like Perry OK on politics and he has been great on RKBA. I just don't think he is a good manager, though he probably has more talent in that area than Kinky does. I'd also say that some of my dissatisfaction with Republicans on the national level is getting spent on Perry because he is the most available target for frustration.

I will forewarn you: They did this in our Mayoral race here in Mobile.

Long story short, the high school dropout, corrupt Democrat won because of the split support for the republicans.

Now the city is bound and determined to go all to hell.

Well here is a hint for any Republican party officials who want my vote in 2006 - you are going to have to do a lot better than "If you don't vote for me the Democrat will win" before you get my vote again. You want my vote? Earn it.

well, the way i see it, as long as machine guns are illegal, emminent domain is legal, and we're spending more than we're making, the odds of me voting for an incumbant are slim.

i voted libertarian in '00, constitution party in '04, i'll probably write-in Ted Nuget in '08
