I have a hypothesis I'd like to put to rest. I'll explain after a week of the poll.
Did you start with a .22LR in a handgun or rifle?

Not really, When my great-grandad past away my grandad inherited all of his guns . when we visited (My grandad) in Alabama (Before we moved) he let me shoot his .410 shotgun at a tree in his backyard and prior to that all I ever shot was a bb gun.

But after that I did get my grrat-grandad's Ruger Mark 2

Yes, a Marlin 99 followed three months later by a double barrel 20 ga.
Way back toward the middle of the last century!:)

Started with a Stevens .22/.410 combo, but was relegated to the .22 tube ;)
After that there was a BRNO .22 belonging to a friend and after that it was a .22 bolt rifle belonging to the school (we had 'cadets' in SA and the rifle range was on the school property).

So yes, I started with .22 rifles and I'm proud of that.

Started with a Daisy BB gun.
Swapped <something> for a Sears Model 1 Single shot bolt rifle, which I still have, 35 years later.
First pistol was 1858 Rem BP, which I still have, 34 years later.
First .22 pistol was a Ruger Mark 1 [$85 new], which I still have, 31 years later.
There have been over 100 bought and sold in many and various calibers, but like the St Pauli commercial says, "You never forget your first..."

J.C. Higgins .22 (sold by Sears). Second was a 10-22 in 1968. Still have the 10-22 but the Higgins is scrap.

Of course it all started with BB guns and then pellet guns!

While rereading this today I remembered the first gun I shot was my grandfathers .22 WRF--where was my head?

For me it was Mom's .410 bolt shotgun (from JC Penney's, IIRC). I was offered a chance to shoot my cousins .22 rifle on an outing a bit later; I was afraid it would kick...

Yes it was a Coey my Dad had cut down and reshaped the stock. My Son made his first shot with it as well.

I started with a BB gun, but I don't think that one counts. My second start was with a 22 rifle. I rarely shot it until I got my own.

I started with a muzzleloading .45 cap lock.

Cartridges and non-corrosive propellant are for wimps.:p

I was about to vote "no", because when I started buying guns, I didn't start with a .22. In fact, I still don't own one (trying to rectify that).

However, I remembered that my first experience with shooting actually was with a .22. It was at a Boy Scout shooting range. I rather suspect that the Boy Scouts don't do shooting anymore... I'd be relieved to hear I was wrong.
