x39 is the 7.62 soviet and it usually chambered in SKS's and Ak's.

7.62 NATO is 7.62 x51mm. It is identical to the .308 winchester round however they discharge with different pressures. The NATO round is usually chambered in hunting rifles.

7.62 NATO is 7.62 x 51 mm

It holds more powder, thus having a higher velocity and longer range.

7.62x39 is only common in Soviet weapons like the AK and SKS, but can also be found in some specialized AR type weapons (XCR or some AR uppers from DPMS or RRA to name a few).

+1... using the 7.62 NATO with a heavier and faster bullet will more than double your effective range. Thats not to say the 39R is not effective... actually it is my personal favorite all-around rifle round.

Well... with what they said... here's a visual...

NOTE: This is a 7mm-08 REM, which is a .308 necked down a smidgeon, on the right, the 7.62x39 on the left... I know.. it's hard to tell the two apart... LOL.... :neener:
