Disappointing range day...

Got a new Glock OEM suppressor barrel from Glock and installed it my Gen 4 G23 to try it out. Brought my 1911 R1 Match as well. Tried two of my favorite self-defense loads and the results were not good for either pistol.

3" to 5" with the Glock being the most accurate at 25 yards with light winds.

Very disappointed and am thinking I need to load at least 50 rounds of the more accurate recipe and try again to see if it's me or the load/gun. Was really hoping for 1.5" or better groups.

Don't have anyone else to shoot with, so that's not an option.

I knew an Olympic pistol shooter back in the day. She said the best exercise is to get a quart of bourbon, throw away the cap and don’t set it down till it’s empty. Apparently this uses all the same muscle groups as pistol shooting.
 
What were the groups like before adding the suppressor?

3" at 25 yards with a stock barrel and an off-the-shelf autopistol in the Glock's price range isn't really that bad. It's not amazing, or anything, and I think you can probably tighten things up by trying different loads, but I wouldn't be upset about those results, especially if you're shooting them offhand as opposed to from a rested position.
 
It’s a new barrel, that’s pretty much a new gun. See how it’s doing after a few hundred rounds.
I have seen groups open up after an intensive cleaning and tighten back up after some fouling shots. It doesn’t get any cleaner than new.
 
Well, I just got back from the range with my new 4" Shield Plus. 2nd range trip with it. Damn, I love that gun. I did VERY well with it. My favorite gun now. Hell, I shoot it better than my Berettas. I guess since I have smaller hands, I finally found a gun that fits my hands so well.

Anyway, I have had bad range days too. I have some slight tremors in my left hand. It usually gets less if I wait to shoot after 1 or 2pm. If I go in the morning, I am wasting my time.

Offhand or from a solid rest?

Still, I personally think your expectations are a bit high. Open sights at 25 yards and 3-5” groups seem respectable with a semiauto pistol, but maybe I have lower expectations.

add a red dot and you would probably halve your group.

I agree. At that distance, that's not bad.
 
When we resided in South-Western PA I was member of three Sportsmen's Clubs. These were not small mud hole organizations but will respected organizations. There were individuals that were exceptional shooters but by and large the average of those that I witnessed using the ranges were not exceptional marksman/shooters. When I persuaded one club to put in a 7-Yd line that's were the majority of shooters shoot from as opposed to the 25Yd line and or the seldom used 50Yd line. I spent the majority of my time shooting Bullseye at the 50Yd line mostly by myself while the 25Yd line was in use with a few shooters and at the 7Yd line it was rear-end to bellow button crowded with shooters.
 
As much as I agree with the past couple posts, here on THR my perception, right or wrong, is that members shoot more often. Combine that with a customized Glock- I’m guessing there’s more than just a barrel replacement- and I don’t feel the Op’s expectations are unreasonably high.

Solid rest.

I know my eyes have aged, and I've just upgraded my glasses so now the sights are finally clear again. It's frustrating in that I've been able to get exceptional accuracy from my pistols before, and it seems the last couple of years it has gotten much more difficult.

Might be because I have so many different pistols now with so many different trigger pulls, that I just need to concentrate on one or two.
 
OP: At least your handgun is among the most reliable in its category. That’s my only basic requirement for Any gun

As long as we have the highest quality guns (even those only for the range)- we can always improve the human factor.

Maybe. But if you are dealing with aging eyes and had to update your glasses, that likely means the target is that much more out of focus. At least that’s my problem.

I know I sound like a broken record, but red dot sights really helped me. And I have a friend in his 80’s who shoots with me, they have really given him a whole new lease on his shooting life.

I absolutely believe that red dots will help me shoot more accurately. My last impressive group was shot with my Glock G19 MOS with a Burris Fastfire III red dot. An inch at 25 yards with a Glock is unheard of...

I'm in the process of building my ultimate carry gun and I'm waiting on the custom slide milled for the new Burris Fastfire IV which will have the 11 moa circle with a dot, which should help my astigmatism.

Just cranked out another 90 rounds of 4 different loads using either the 155gr RMR RN bullet or the 155gr Hornady XTP. Used Ramshot Silhouette and WSF in 4 different weights from medium to hot. I've noticed a trend of my pistols with the longer barrels preferring the lighter bullets in .40 S&W.

Will go back to the range tomorrow to try them out.

Another issue is finding components that were accurate in the past, but impossible to find now. I've found that the Speer TMJ bullets are very accurate in my G35 match gun, but impossible to find the past year.

you are doing fine. consistent follow-through is important at 25 yards.

Spent about 4 hours at the range shooting 6 different loads through the G23 and the 1911. I was able to tell that different loads did better than others and really concentrated on sight picture and trigger pulls.

Was able to get groups around 2.5" with the stock barrel in the G23, and the R1, which is not too bad, but still not where I'd like to be.

the health to enjoy it if you want.
