Disassembling a handgun

I know it's an unsafe practice, but I was looking at new guns and the salesman was showing me one in particular. He was showing me how easy it was to disassemble but he was doing it with the magazine still in the gun. He didn't force the slide off the frame, but it seemed like it took a little more uummph to take it apart.

My question is, can disassmembling a gun with the mag still inserted damage the weapon in anyway?

That's a bad habit in any case but IIRC some guns cannot be disassembled with the magazine in the gun.

Always remove the magazine unless the weapon needs it to e dissasembled. And if that is the case then make sure its an empty mag. The salesman should really have not done that.

I doubt it would damage anything on a modern pistol, but it is an unsafe practice. You're suppose to unload & make your pistol safe before disassembly.

Depends on the gun. Some guns need the magazine to be inserted to dry-fire the gun to release the mainspring before disassembly.

Definitely ask him to remove the mag first ... if you don't want to be confrontational about it, just ask to "take a look at it."

The Ruger Mk III requires that the mag be in the pistol at several points during takedown (because of the magazine interlock safety). BUT --- it has to be removed for the action/barrel to be removed from the frame. (This is NOT correctly depicted in many of the issued manuals.)

In the case of the MK III, if you were to use enough force to remove the action with the mag in, you'd be treating yourself to a new mag (at best) or a new action (at worst). Assuming you were using a big enough mallet ...
