Disorderly Person Shot And Killed By Police

Location: The Waffle House on Academy Lane

Bessemer, AL police were summoned too the Waffle House located on
Academy Lane in Bessemer, AL on the morning of 17 June 06 at the
report of a disorderly person branishing a firearm. Upon arrival officers
found 25 year old Derrick Vance of Bessemer inside the cafeteria. As
officers approached, Vance darted out the door and into the parking
lot of the adjacent Cracker Barrel restaurant. When officers caught
up too Vance, a brief scuffle ensued and he again broke away and
ran. Orders were given by responding police officers for Vance to
"put his hands in the air, and do not attempt to go for his gun".

Once Vance disobeyed police commands, officers shot the suspect
in the parking lot of the Cracker Barrel; and he was pronounced
dead on the scene. A brief look into past criminal history of Vance
revealed that he had a viloent past; with threats against police.
The officer involved in the shooting was immediately placed on
administrative leave with pay; while a full review of the shooting
is conducted by the Jefferson County (Alabama) sheriffs office.

It was probably a good shoot, but regardless of the positive outcome a guy did lose his life so Big Grins aren't appropriate. For Dillinger, Zarq, OBL et al Big Grins are appropriate, not for a 25yo loser.

My buddy's 21 year old loser neighbor flipped out on drugs three weeks ago.
Took the family hostage, SWAT came in, and the kid brew his head off before SWAT took him out. No smile faces; it's rather disturbing, actually.

Two drug hoods shooting each other, killing each other, without harming anyone else, that gets a little smile face from me.

Is it just me, or am I seeing a transition to more violent acts towards Law Enforcement lately? From all the reporting on the local and national news, it seems suspects are acting more and more defiant, and actually engaging Officers.

Indeed. I think "dangerous" might be more accurate. Sounds like a righteous shoot to me... wouldn't want to be that officer right now <emphasis added>.

Why not? This was a good shoot. From what I read the LEO followed his training and prevailed. He should be darn proud of that fact. He should be grateful that he was on the scene and not some lesser-trained/experienced or indecisive LEO who might have gotten themselves killed. HE DID HIS JOB. I constantly drill into the heads of the LEOs I train that they have nothing to feel bad about when they do their job. Based on the written account, I'm proud of this LEO and he should be proud of himself. A job well-done.

All ya'll know good and well there ain't never been, no how and no way, no disorderly person in no Waffle House. Everyone I know who patronizes those establishments have always conducted themselves with the highest, and I mean highest, level of decorum.

I'm proud of this LEO and he should be proud of himself

There is no doubt in my mind (barring some really extraordinary evidence that might surface) that he did his job, did it well, and made the world a little bit safer. It also appears that his hand was forced, and that he had no choice but to shoot this fellow.

He also killed a man in the prime of life, and will shortly be neck-deep in a series of legal proceedings on several levels questioning everything from his moral character to his choice of breakfast cereals. I suspect that what he will deal with in the coming months is going to really suck.

Hopefully I'll never find out.

Is it just me or has there been a lot of violent stuff going on at waffle houses lately? I remember a few other recent shootings in the news that happened at bickford's or waffle house or some other pancake place.

Well if the fellow would have followed the officers instructions they would have found it to be a butter knife and he'd remain unshot.

Get a rubber knife and a friend, go after them with the rubber knife while they try to draw on you when they realize you're coming. I'd recommend chalk dust on the knife. Cops know the outcome of this. They've seen it on tape and done it in practice. Within a certain range a knife weilder can kill or injure an armed man even if fatally shot. It's worse if they've not unholstered their weapon by the time the person was within 20 feet.

A butter knife is a knife at normal viewing distance and displaying it to a cop is an agressive act when coupled with an unwillingness to obey their orders which precludes examining it further other than 'weapon'.

Poor Poor Waffle house

In Indiana they are called "Waffle and Steak", don't eat at anything with waffle house scrawled on it in Indiana they are pure poison.

It happens around Waffle Houses that are near enough to bars for the drunks to stagger in. Same for Denny's. This is usually in a metro area.

The ones on the highways away from the drunks it's pretty sedate.

I was at one where a person from NY wanted to harass the waitress loudly.

They were quite fortunate to walk out unharmed but only because they were only loud and didn't bring their hands to any sort of striking position. The cook was armed with some interesting knives and three others I know were armed because I'd talked to them quite a bit about it at that Waffle & Steak.

Me on the other hand had left his pistol in the trunk, which also had a shotgun and some rifles and such. Fat lot of good it'd a done me. :banghead:

The sheriffs had been called and when they heard the story one of them remarked, "Doing that aroundhere could have got him shot." I'm pretty sure he ate there on occasion though the smart ones always got coffee there. Coffee there sucks now since they got rid of the sealed, almost moron proof packs.

The fellow that had brought him in was a nice guy who I'd seen and talked to but this was a relative from NY who didn't get it.

Bessemer police I-D man shot by officer
BESSEMER, Ala. Bessemer authorities have released the name of a man who was shot and killed in a weekend confrontation with a police officer.

25-year-old Derrick Vance, also of Bessemer, died early Saturday morning near a Waffle House on Academy Lane.

Sgt. Hank Edwards, a police spokesman, said the unnamed officer had responded to a disorderly conduct call at the restaurant when Vance, who was armed, ran to an adjacent parking lot. He said Vance was shot when he ignored the officer's order not to reach for a gun.

Edwards said several people witnessed the incident and the shooting appears to be justified.

Police said Vance had a criminal record and a history of threatening police officers.

The Jefferson County sheriff's department is handling the investigation

Law enforcement is not given the credit they deserve for serving their country. Often it's worse than serving in the military. Squeezed from above, Ran by policy makers who more often times have no business running LEO affairs. Ram rodded by the public and at mercy of the press my heart goes out to these guys in blue who have to make a tough decision in a split second to take out a life like that knowing full well that making the wrong decision can cost you your career.
You have an honorable profession and you should be paid more than you do. you work odd hours and odd days and you sacrifice more than we will ever know. You in the Blue uniform are our true unsung heroes. It's you that thin blue line that is but a thread set between a civilized society and anarchy that can threaten to govern this land at anytime and anywhere. My hat is off to you for what you provide this great land of ours, safety, security and prosperity.
