Just have to get this off my chest. So, I have been looking around on the internet and I am seeing some bulk 5.56 in stock and ready to ship. Of course it is going for about $1 a round. I know that a big foot sighting is more common than in stock 5.56. I am asking everyone to please resist the urge to buy. The longer we are willing to pay these prices the longer they will stay up and, more importantly, the less likely that prices will ever get back to what they were. So, please resist the urge.

This would be a lot easier if there was some kind of twelve step program.

I'll do it for both of us! It would be foolish of me to stock up on .223 when I do not yet own an AR. Just curious, have reloading components spiked too? I've just started ordering stuff for shotgun, and it's the same price it was a year ago.

I can't say. I am not into reloading like I want to be. I read a lot of posts that components are hard to come by.

As far as I can tell, prices on reloading components haven't spiked, really. But a lot of items are about as rare as hen's teeth.

By the way, I passed on bulk 5.56 today at the LGS. Still, the employee said that the 20 ammo cans he just got in would be gone in 30 minutes. And I believe it. I watched half of it disappear in about 5-6 minutes, even with a one can per customer limit. And guys were snatching up $10 boxes of American Eagle .223 about as fast as they could open the cases. It would have went quicker, but there was a 3 box per customer limit.

The prices of reloading components haven't yet spiked but just like the guns and the ammo, you can't find them...

I kinda lucked out.... bought 1,000 5.56 rounds before all of this started and now got 1,000 more from a sponsor...

Now for reloading gear? No, price-wise it is about like it has been. However, finding anything to load .223/5.56 or .308 is dang near impossible.

I've had .223 components on hand for several years and took comfort in that. But now it's time to load em up. You can't shoot components.

Everything common is gone at the local Cabelas. All the 308 and 223 ammo and components are gone except for the really fancy expensive ammo and bullets. Bummer!

I've gone to shooting my less common stuff. For some reason, there's no rush on .303 British surplus ammo?

Got an email today from a friend of a friend asking where I buy ammo. This person had purchased an AR in NOVEMBER and had never found any ammo to shoot it.

Thank you M2. I should have been less specific. It is not just the stuff going for a dollar a round it is also the stuff that is going $13 & $14 dollars for a box of twenty rounds. For those who are new, this stuff should be going for $7 - $9 for twenty. We talk about sending a message to politicians. Send a message to our sellers. I don't hold it against them for what they are charging, I know supply and demand is at work here. Just wait for supply to catch up. The longer we pay these prices the more normal they become and the less likely the are to return to pre-panic prices.

If anyone wants to start a support group to keep people from panic buying I'm in.

Ammo isn't going anywhere. I pass up .223/5.56 probably once a week at my LGS (at what we consider high of $8/box of 20) so others can get it if they want to go shooting.

Same here. For handguns, I shoot only reloads... ever. I don't reload a rifle caliber that is cheaper to buy/shoot, but I do stock in bullets, powder and primers. As soon as price spikes or ammo becomes unavailable, I load it up. That tipping point is somewhere around $225 per thousand. Below that it is cheaper to buy retail. Above that, it is cheaper to reload. I reloaded most of 2009, and I started back reloading 7.62x39 and .223 a month ago.

I don't have any 'urge' which I need to resist. I stocked up long ago when supplies were higher and prices were lower.

I read somewhere that a presidential election (and gun panic) occurs every 4 years. No surprises in 2008 and 2012.

Then your LGS is an anomaly, for now, but thatll soon change. The current gun and ammo run is unprecedented.

In 2008, the stores were bought out, but this time, the distributors on up are bought out.

Last year, ammo maker ATK sold one billion dollars worth of ammo. As of January 22nd, they're back ordered for THREE billion dollars worth of ammo. So three weeks into the new year, they've tripled last years demand.

Don't think this is like last time.

My shop has always been an anomaly. Better prices than Walmart in good times and isn't gouging like many other places are. The only reason he's at $8/box instead of $6/box is because distributor's price went up.

Hey, I've bought ammo in calibers I didn't own a gun for yet.

This is called "planning ahead", and is not a sign of being a gun nut.

Now if I'd bought a bayonet for a gun I didn't own yet... But let's not derail the discussion.....

This is an easy request for those who got in before the craziness. I do feel bad for those who only recently "woke up" and realized having a gun or two and a fair amount of ammo is a good idea.

This craziness has to stop I havent shot any thing but 22 for like 2 months and now Im worred about replacing that

I bought 500 rounds of Independence 223 from Midway yesterday for $219.99.
Be patient as deals are still out there to be had.
I received a notice and ordered immediately and was having trouble checking out because the traffic on the site was being swamped undoubtedly.
Anyway three minutes later you could not even get on Midways site.
Glad Mr. Potterfield held the line on the price.
He can be assured of my future business.
