Do men and women feel the same way about guns

In general, the current generation between say 21 and up, Using the same backgrounds as their countreparts, do woman feel the same attraction to guns in general than men, or is it more a mans sport accepted by a small percent of woman who just go along with their husbands lifstyle choices. Of course they are are going to be some exceptions, like men who dress in womans clothing, "funny example", but we had an ex, "step son" in law who did for 20 yrs without anyone knowing. "For another forum".
I notice more women buying guns. I wonder if it's because someone told them they should, because of crime, or is it becoming a mainstream accepted lifestyle change amongst woman in general?
PS: don't ask about the son in law,lol, only reason I mentioned it was my step daughter knew about it all along, and kept it quiet. She accepted it, and if you met her you would not think it possible, as she is a good looking girl. But she did, so I wonder how much they overlook or just pretend to be or not be interested?

You'll find two answers to this:

One being an analysis of a *lot* of factors that basically says "Gender is an indication of neither opinion nor attitude."
And then you'll find a lot of opinion based on generalization of a very small dataset or bias.

As for my opinion based on the generalization of my circumstances:
Depends on the woman. I know women who love shooting, I know women who love going shooting with others, I know women who hate shooting and will poopoo your range time and I know women who would love to love shooting but are plain scared.

I dont think you can lump all women into one catagory any more than you can all men.
A lot seems to depend on our exposure at a young age and how we were exposed. As to just following along it may happen a few times but wont go on for long if someone is not having a good time. Way to many women get put off by folks who just dont think to include them in the sport at a young age as they do for their boys.
Luckily reading here I see a reversal of this trend lately and it is a great thing for all of us. The young ladies are the future of this country every bit as much as the young men. Without their support our constitutional right will slowly wither and die.

Well, I don't think women feel the same way about collecting things (such as guns). Yes, there are women who collect dolls, and recently I've been going through my late Mom's china collection, but I think men are more genetically predisposed to obsessive acquisition. For me, it was musical instruments, then old motorcycles, then old cars, then guns.

There was an attractive young woman at the LGS a few weeks ago telling the owner that she was becoming addicted to guns after her first couple of purchases. I noticed that a couple of the male customers became rather interested in her after that comment. After all, an attractive woman with an obsession for guns could have some definite "ideal wife" potential!!

I didn't bother, as I'm already married, and I consider myself lucky for my gal's mere tolerance of guns.

I took the CCW class last year, and was surprised to see that half of the students were women. I asked the instructor about it, and he said that was typical.

Once, a few of us were standing around at work talking about guns. One of the gals was listening in, and finally she said, "What is it about guns that guys like so much? What makes guns so special."

A couple of guys tried to explain to her about accuracy, things that go bang, etc., etc., but I realized that none of us really had a good answer for her.

It got me to thinking, and finally the answer came to me. Almost every recreational pursuit men enjoy involves a projectile: baseball, football, basketball, tennis, hockey, golf, darts, racing, archery, sex, you name it. A woman will walk across the room to drop something in the waste basket; a man will toss it. What's the first thing a little boy does when he goes outside to play? Picks up something and throws it.

A bullet is simply the ultimate projectile. I've got daughters, and they shoot, but I don't think the thrill is the same for them. I think they like the challenge, and they like the feedback when a steel target clangs or a bowling pin topples, but I think their enjoyment is different than mine. (They also love it when the boys at school are bragging about their airsoft guns, and they can sniff, "Airsoft...ha. We shoot real guns.")

Anyway, I think that's your answer. I think the shooting sports are a natural for women, because they can compete head to head with men (and beat us), but I think most of them don't share our innate drive to launch a projectile.

It's the hormones in processed foods, we are becoming A sexual so as less men want guns the gap is filled so to speak with women wanting that tool of power.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading in an article recently that 1/3 of men own while only 1/10th of women do. Thing is the number of women who own has remained consistent for a long time while the mens number tend to fluctuate. So I guess even in the realm of firearms women are more stable.

recently moved to sc--everyone around here seems to be either military or ex military. ladies--wives, girlfriends and service women--i have never seen so much positive acceptance of the shooting sports. many have concealed carry permits.

There's an impression that everyone associated with the military - both male and female - are pro-gun. That may be true before going on deployment, but I know quite a few returning vets who want nothing to do with firearms. For whatever reason which I don't want to ask about, the negative memories were apparently enough to make them swear off them. I'm just saying it's not a blanket statement that military = pro-gun.

I think more alpha males are gun friendly than the rest. I also feel that woman who like power, seek out power and embellish power are more apt to like guns. In today's society, women make up more and more supervisory roles previously held by men. Women are taking over the world and they are the new alpha males. They will also be the ones who love guns the way we do. Women who love being women may just accept them as toys for the boys but it does seem like more are tolerant of guns today than previously. It may have to do with more women super spys in movies and aggressive women cops on tv.

Men and women think differently in general... general statement.

But I think the woman % has increased.

Just like Ive seen more women at sporting events like football, baseball, drag racing, and NASCAR.

The flip side... more men get manicures and be stay at home dads and raise the kids tha beofe too.


I dont think its a matter of testoserone, estrogen or being girly or manly.

I think its a matter of social evolution.

My wife thinks about new shoes the same way I think about old guns.

At one point, she even had at least 5-6 times more new shoes then I had old guns.

That has since been corrected.

I don't try and guesstimate on anything anymore, every day it seems that my opinions on stuff get shot down in flames... for instance my stepdaughter and her boyfriend just "had" to move in here with us, he was in the Marines for 4 years, got a Purple Heart over in Afghanistan when an IED went off, I figured we would end up going out shooting pretty soon but now I'm just not so sure...I have a CC permit and carry pretty much 24/7, the other day it warmed up real good and I was working so I tossed the long sleeve work shirt off to the side, exposing my P95 IWB. He didn't say anything to me, but I heard later through the grapevine that he made a comment after I left the room that I "was just looking for trouble, carrying a loaded pistol all the time"...

I guess just being IN the military must not automatically make you a big fan of firearms, and in this case also not have a grasp on the reality that is our modern civilization.

Back on point, my wife likes guns about as much as I do, she is going in for surgery on Monday to have the two torn discs in her neck removed, and one of her topics in the conversation we were having was along the lines of she wonders if she will be able to handle the recoil of the 9mm again! Love that woman...

Interesting topic.

I don't know any girls who have independently explored firearms pursuits. I DO know quite a few who have approached someone around them, and expressed extreme interest.

Once the initial introduction has been made, it seems like women are similarly prone to catching 'the bug'.

Well now you know one woman who independently entered the firearm community. Well, I dragged along my teenage son. Husband isn't a shooter, no shooting friends. Only realized how many people at work are AFTER I got into it. I don't have the discretionary income to be a collector but I can understand it. Why do I like guns? The same reason I like to drive a well-tuned car or ride a good horse; there is a tangible outcome to the effort put into it, improvement is measurable and I like the rush.

Lately a LOT more females are joining the local gun club. Not talking members spouses either! Age does not seem to make a difference in numbers that much but the older ones do tend more often to own multiple firearms. More of an economic/financial stability thing IMHO. They all tend to be naturally good at hand eye coordination and thus better shots with less effort than the males it seems. Good thing they do not descend on the gun shows to buy like what happens at the department store tag sales--- The male firearms owner would never be able to compete. Do they all feel the same about firearms?? My personal observation has been the bigger the boom the bigger the gals smile becomes. Which brings up the point that our CAS shooters, especially the women REALLY like to dress the part when competing.

More women are taking entry level firearms classes where I volunteer as an instructor. Mostly Basic Pistol rather than Basic Rifle. More women are applying for range membership lately too. I think, like others have mentioned, that societal norms are changing. It's more acceptable for women to enjoy shooting. I like this trend.

At some risk, I offer the following (I've known a lot of men and women, and this holds true in my experience):

In general terms, men think more than they feel about most things; women feel more than they think about most things. So there's simply no way the average man and the average woman can view things the same way.

I think that can be summarized that men react more to logic where women react more towards emotion. This has been proven over the years. It's also why men seem to be better at math (logic) and women seem to do better in areas that require less logic and more intuition. (teaching, the arts, etc).

A few years ago in Scientific American there was an article on the differences between men and women, other than the obvious.

It was written by a women; a professor at some college.

Her stance on it? For women in general:

Women are nesters and depend on men for provision and protection. They want to be “owned”. However, if their man isn’t around they become protective by necessity and will fight like a tiger to protect what is theirs: children, the home, their selves.

This fits today’s world when women are in the workforce out in the world and their man cannot always be there. They might be soft and sweet and cuddly but when needed they can be tougher than any man around.

IME, women tend to not naturally gravitate towards firearms as much as men. However, those that have just been "told" that they are dangerous are much easier to convert than their male counterparts (I think we [males] are just stubborn...)
