Back in 1999 I looked at buying a new gun safe. Either a larger safe (I had nearly run out of room) or simply a second safe to augment the one I already owned.

In the process I talked to a serious collector/dealer of militaria and a neighbor. Mostly from the US Civil War, WWI and WWII. He recommended that if I had the space, to instead create a hardened "collection room" where I could display my collection of firearms and edged weapons, rather than keep them locked away.

At first I was taken aback -- it ran so contrary to current thinking, which was/is to lock them away in fireproof safes. Yet the more I pondered it, the more I realized he was right. We're only here for a given number of years after all. I also remember a couple of similar rooms from when I was a small child. With encouragement from my wife, I remodeled and hardened a large spare bedroom forfeited by one of our sons when he married and moved out on his own.

In addition to many display items, the room also has a work desk/table (a great place to clean/polish items) and a couple of overstuffed leather chairs which look like they belong at Oxford.

This room has given me great pleasure over the past 22 years. I have coffee in it every morning at the very minimum. Far more than visiting my collection in a couple of safes. I'm pleased to find my wife in "the Gun Room" on a regular basis reading from the small library on display (at least half of the books are hers, on different aspects of history.) More than a few pieces on display are hers -- arms collected from her parents and other family members over the years.

Maybe the most precious pieces is a small cabinet which holds a rifle, a shotgun and a sword. They belonged to my neighbor who first gave me the idea to create such a room. He passed 6 years ago and his wife allowed us to buy the pieces from his estate.

Obviously both my wife and I are careful to not let just anyone know about our special room, much less tour it.

I'm just curious if anyone else has such a space? Thanks.

I have a "gun room" containing most all my firearms, about half under lock + half on outside racks. I have mixed feelings about gun safes. If you have priceless collectibles, then yah, it's a must. Otherwise, I think you're just helping the insurance company. I did BTW have to increase the value my ins cos covers to protect them against fire/theft.

The above almost looks like Teddy Roosevelt’s trophy room.

I remember visiting his home as a kid on a school trip, and that’s what impressed me most.

Lots of guns, too, which are probably now removed.

Yes, I do display some of my firearms. The motivation to do so came from two factors: 1) storage space limitations; and 2) attractive firearm that shoots poorly. I have both rifles and handguns mounted on wall display, thusly:

And I also have one rifle mounted with these leather straps sold by an axe company (can't think of the name off the top, sorry*):

As far as security goes, the handguns are disabled so they can't shoot. The rifles ... eh ... I want to be able to take them down off the wall and be shot, so they're functional, but honestly can't picture a home burglar knowing what to do with them or especially what kind of ammo they need or where to find it, heh heh.

I will very soon. We recently (as in this week) finished remodeling an unused bedroom in our home, much as you did, and have created a reloading/gun area for me and sewing area for the wife. I will have a few guns, antique ammo boxes, decoys, and militaria on some shelves around the walls once I get them hung up. Most of the other guns will continue to live in the two cabinets in our room, as I really don't want to move them.

How KEWL, what a novel idea!

The room idea is great if have the space and money. Another concern I have is fire. It could be devastating to the contents.

I used to have an old Marlin 1897 I used to display over the fireplace. Girlfriend was cool with it, but when she became my wife she soon wasn't ok with it anymore. "Its not that I don't like guns, it just doesn't fit with the decor". The deer hide on the fireplace quietly disappeared too. I pushed back for several years but eventually gave up the fight and finally built my own "gun room/office" in a corner of the basement last fall. Working from home every day during covid is what forced me, 1/2 the basement is finished already but those rooms are occupied so I was stuck in the middle of the unfinished storage area working off a small workbench. Reorganizing the storage let me carve out a 12'x8.5' space to build a finished room and get a real desk.

Two of the walls are just drywall so I still keep all my guns in the safe in that room, though if I ever get to a point where I'm not on work video conference calls every day I'll probably put the old Marlin up on the wood wall, I don't think corporate would care for it but a deer hide and some fishing poles and antlers in the background a OK. I don't really have any other gun related collectible stuff. Excuse the mess, with dual duty between a daily work office and weekend/evening man cave I'm struggling to keep it clutter free.

for old firearms, is hanging one really any particular risk to have it stolen? for the most part, they aren't worth that much, have serial numbers on them, and aren't particularly usefull in terms of someone flipping them for cash, or using them for further criminal activity. I do think about taking an old Parker Shotgun that was a family item, out of the safe, and making a mount for it to put over the fireplace. It is not in great condition, and while I do think it would fire, the stock is a bit cracked, and the barrel is dented, so - I don't think I'll ever use it, but it would kill me if it was stolen, so - it sits in the safe.

Next house I build will definitely have a large side rooms with concrete walls and a vault door.

Wiscoaster, do you ever remove the bolts and place them elsewhere?

I have about 15 rifles on the walls , in just about every room . The kitchen does not have one nor the bathroom . I am constantly taking them down as I walk through the house , to fondle and pull up to the shoulder and think of the glory days .
