Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

I've discovered that I must avoid threads that involve the ideology that if a fellow human is in trouble I should just walk away and dial 911.
I get too wound up about it and wind up either getting the thread closed by calling someone(s) a coward, or I get a couple of posters talking down to me safely from their high horse on the other end of the cat 5.
:fire: See?

Bottom line is, those threads can be productive for people, but only if they stay open to new posts and responses. And, they won't if I jump in and start posting my thoughts.

I don't get involved in caliber wars, what gun for my wife, or "someone looked at me wrong at the local stop and rob" after action reports anymore. I don't care. You sort it out.

Things or topics I avoid on forums...

-Religion

-Race bashing disguised as humor

-Users who have made it their personal number one mission in life to come after me

-Caliber wars

-Combat experts with no references, links or proof of their skills

-Original posts with grammar so bad it requires two reads

I look at most threads, and I admit join some really dumb conversations.

There's basically two kinds of people who visit this forum those who need information and those who really have nothing else to do. I, as well as most people have been in eithier group depending on the time(this isn't bad as sometimes you can help someone with information)

Except for really out there topics like TEOTWAWKI, I don't think most threads are bad. This is a forum, which is a place to discuss and exchange ideas yeah, theres a lot of sifting to find the nuggets but thats how it works. Some people can't afford to take classes in SD or learn it in the real world. Seeing someone post outrageus comments helps you seperatew the crazies from the ones who have been there and thus decide if other posts from them have merit. So even crazy threads have usefulness, for example if sm kept making insane posts in SHTF threads his credibility would drop. The fact that he dosen't helps his cred.

That being said I've read a couple posts on threads and then ignore the thread and there are people I ignore(as I'm sure some ignore me)

I don't really avoid threads per se. I do tend to avoid individual posts that run on forever or are way out in left field (or both). I'll go back and skim them if a later posts references them, but for the most part, I don't read long or wacky posts.

I do PLONK threads as soon as line-item quoting starts. It's all over for any productive content when you see that.

I avoid AR threads particularly unless they are about hunting applications and I'm starting to avoid those as well now.

I avoid any thread that uses "fudd" in the title.

I avoid posting in any thread that I have limited knowledge on the subject matter. I read them if I'm interested; just not post.

I avoid most legal forum threads. But sometimes I slip.

On a tangent, I often ignore (or take very lightly) posts by those having less than 10, 100, or 1000 posts, as most participants go thru a standard mental process as they post more. Bluntly, it's not until someone has more than 1000 posts here that they probably have something unique/insightful to say, and that in the context of nuances common to THRers. Yes, that's unfair - but I can only read so much, and a very low post count usually means I've seen that post way too many times already. Flip side, posters with >10,000 posts garner greater attention.

I disagree. I have read bull**** from people with thousands of posts and I have read very informative posts from people with less than a thousand. IMO a higher post count just means that someone is spending too much time online. Usually you can really tell who knows what they are talking about and those that don't.

I should add that while I attempt to avoid the "never carry while drinking threads", I sometimes fail.

It's just too damn much fun.

Biker:D

I sometimes avoid "how many guns in your cabinet" or similar questions about ammo quantity or stuff like that. I think I can chalk that up to a ingrained worry that "big brother" is the one asking and it is for a reason only big brother can have, which can't be a good reason.

I like some of the SHTF threads. Some of the posts are (unintentionally I am sure) quite funny.

I mostly ignore the caliber wars since there is nothing new that has not been out there for 50 years on the 9mm versus 45 debate.

No one has mentioned WAL MART. I knew it, people read those every time. A Walmart thread is like a car wreck. When you drive by you slow down to look because it is human nature.

Any thread where the first sentence sounds like.....

"I know this has been asked a thousand times but here's why my thread is totally different..."

The poster then goes on to explain how the same question that has already been asked 10,000,000 times (and is easily answered using the search function) is so radically clever and different than how it's been asked previously.

I couldn't agree less. I don't see post count as any kind of ranking mechanism at all.

I can think of at least two 10,000+ posters from whom I've never seen anything I care to read. I can also think of many posts from newbies that I enjoyed immensely.

Post count is no indicator of anything except available time. I personally wish it'd go away. Join date is good enough to gauge that.

post count is not something I take too seriously.

i get a little suspicious though if a see a guy with very few posts who says something out of the ordinary.

Only threads started by the Tourist...

Yikes, three entire pages and this is the first mention. I thought I had done a better job than that.

Seriously, I do not want this thread to touch on pesonalities. Yes, there are lots of you who befuddle or annoy me. That's life, I guess, kind of my own personal "ignore list." I do intend to use that tighter standard more and more. Why upset myself?

But my purpose was a discussion of issues. In other words, a topic is inappropriate when Bob says it, and when Joe says it. In certain circumstances our mythical 'Bob' might be a better writer while 'Joe' is a crashing bore. As stated, life is too short.

this here ain't my first rodeo.
I was speaking generally and cynically.
Yes, I do recognize that some "newbies" have thousands of posts elsewhere, and recognize their value here ... they just have to compete against the true newbies.
I couldn't agree less.
OK.
post count is not something I take too seriously.
And, as some failed to note, as do I. It indicates the odds a post is valuable ... but is not proof.

I knew I'd regret writing that bit.

we all have posted SOMETHING

Oh, no question there, I'm a big offender. But look at my list.

1). No threads denigrating actions of LEOs.
2). No threads denigrating actions of veterans.
3). No threads on motorcycles unless the OP owns a bike.
4). No threads using the word "mental" as a topic description.
5). No more mall ninja threads of any sort.
6). No more SHTF or TEOTWAWKI threads.

I want to be connected to discussions with people who enjoy life and participate. I don't want to waste a dozen posts with a "biker" who finally asks me what a 'pan' is. I can easily think up better yarns than mall ninjas. I don't believe the "S" is in the "F," and on the shadow governments I don't even believe in the "F."

I would rather get chewed out for six pages politically, ethically, morally, spiritually and ethnically by a guy on a real knuckle that listen to a one liner by a guy in cammie using his mom's computer.

If you don't own a knife and get scared going to the mall, for Pete's sake just say so! We'll find out anyway!

AR building threads, religious threads, UN/BATFE boogeyman threads, URGENT NRA REPORT reposts, History of Gun Control, Charleton Hestons Basement OMGZ U WONT BLEIVE THIS!, and lastly:

I really really hate and avoid threads that bash on California, New York, or other unfriendly states, and devolve into a chorus of voices calling for abandoning those of us on the frontlines of the conflict because the situation is fluid, and the posters are all safe and cuddly in places that are not under threat. So emboldened, they would rather throw us under the bus than make a hard choice and pitch in.

In the same vein, the GOA styled absolutist proclamations about somehow magically repealing the NFA while simultaneously being unwilling to fight for those of us who have less freedom than they do.
