Do you ever have gun nightmares?

Not really. I had a really weird dream involving zombies one day. I fell asleep watching Resident Evil after spending a day at the range, so of course zombies and guns were involved. I cant remember much about it though.

^ ahahahahahaha :D

anyways my gun nightmares alwasy involve the police takining them from me. a few times ive died because i refused to drop my nagant (let it touch the dirty ground? NEVER!) :what:

No, I have "It's the end of the semester, and I suddenly realize I forgot to attend one of my classes all semester, and now I'm going to flunk!" nightmares.

I haven't been in college in 20 years, you'd think I'd stop having these flashbacks...

I've had a few dreams where I was shooting / carrying a gun, and break all the safety rules and almost (or actually) shoot someone I shouldn't.

The "ineffective shots" thing comes up now and then, often followed by the "no more ammo" scenario.

Having hunted with different pistols, and seen the difference in effect of different loads may ahve some bearing on my dreams like this. I prefer 44 spls, 44 mags, and 45 Colt pistols. I'm personally NOT impressed with the 45 auto w/ 230 gr ball ammo. It could easily be a star in a "ineffective shots/hits" dream for me. Sorry if that is at odds with popular impressions of the 45 auto, it's just my experience from hunting small game up to coyote size with one. Maybe small game is harder to stop than an average BG?

...I realize that somehow I've managed to bring a handgun all that way, sidestepping security (without even meaning to!).
I have this one two, except usually it is that I have somehow aquired something class III, usually a suppressed FA MP5. Talk about mixed emotions.

...And a few moments later, I got it!!
and BTW, SHTFic = Sh1t Hits The Fan Fiction, and ZedLit = Zombie Apocalypse Literature. I am totally addicted to Post Apocalyptic fiction.

Every once in a while. They are pretty similar to others.

1. The guns reliability. Although my Glock 19 (which is always the gun in my dreams) has been 100 percent reliable, it always jams in my dreams.

2. No ammo left. The gun holds 15 rounds, which is more than enough rounds IMO, but for some reason, in my dreams I only have 6. The slide never locks back and the only way I find out that I am out of ammo is when I pull the trigger (double action) enough times to realize im out.

3. Multiple attackers. There always seem to be more than one or two attackers. The dream never seems to end, and everywhere I go there is someone trying to harm me or my family. I usually cant tell who is bad or not either.

4. BB gun effect. Although I havent had these dreams for a while, I have had dreams where my bullets trajectory was like spitballs, hitting the ground before my target only 30 feet away.

5. Defective ammo. This always seems to happen right when I have a small amount of rounds left, and when I am up close and personal. Right when I get up on the bad guy, I pull the trigger, hear the firing pin hit, but no reaction. I remember a recent dream where I fired the gun at the back of the BGs head at point blank range. It fired, but had no effect on him. The gun jammed too. Like mentioned before, sometimes the bullets take a long time to exit the barrel, so after I pull the trigger, I try to keep the gun on target while waiting for the bullet to exit, not knowing exactly when it will.

6. No effect on the BG. This is pretty common for these dreams. I dump my whole magazine in the attacker with no effect.

Its weird though, since I actually like these dreams. Im scared in the dreams, and im shaken up after waking, but it reminds me to check my weapons to make sure of reliabilty, and it also makes me aware of senarios (though not always real) that I could possibly avoid in real life.

While sharing a hotel room with a friend during a gun class I heard the following "hey do you want to shoot my .45?". To this day I remind him of the silly thing he said in his sleep. Funny thing is now everyone in the group will sometimes say the same thing out of no where. Thats the fun part of a close group of guys.

I often have dreams where I get in a fight and my punches are very weak, or my gunshots, while accurate, cause no damage, no blood, nothing. I unload mag after mag at my assailiant(s) to no avail. And, being dreams, I either wake up at that point, or something stupid happens, like I finally defeat them with a purple umbrella, or a jelly donut or some other such Freudian thing...

feelings of helplessness due to circumstances in life beyond one's control.

I usually have these Ineffective Fight dreams during times of stress, so I think you're on to something there.

(Sometimes though, I have very cool Hong Kong Action Movie style dreams. Those are very fun to experience!)

I have a few from time to time. Usually it's always:

1) Ultra heavy trigger pull, like 100 lbs or so then...

2) either the BB gun effect, which in essence is pretty much no effect and/or

3) the person gets back up seemingly unharmed.

Really it's just frustrating more or less.

Had a bad dream where a bg tried to shoot me and I tried to defend myself with a Dan Wesson .357. After shooting the DW, I pistol whipped the bg, the bbl sleeve came off and the bbl broke.

Thats when I woke up.

.38snubfan, I had a dream almost exactly like the one you described. My sister, who I love very much, was attacking me with a knife. I kept yelling for her to stop and she wouldn't finally I had to shoot. I woke up sweating and crying my eyes out. Probably one of the worst dreams I have ever had.

No, I have "It's the end of the semester, and I suddenly realize I forgot to attend one of my classes all semester, and now I'm going to flunk!" nightmares.

I have college nightmares also and I finished a few years ago. I guess being a college student traumatizes you for life. My firearms related nightmares always revolve around me not being able to get to my gun in time, not being able to load it in time or hesitating to pull the trigger. Funny thing is it always seems to revolve around just one of my pistols, like the rest don't exist in my dreamland.

Well at the risk of being called a nut, or at the risk of being called as useless as Ziggy Freud, I think dreams like these, especially those that are recurrent, are very often tied into feelings of helplessness. The recurrent dreams of this nature reflect feelings that are not usually conscious feelings but, they are more likely feelings that you have repressed over the years and, they are probably due to some form of traumatic event that badly affected you.

To have dreams about firearms failures, or your failure to be able to use one, when you are in some way being attacked are classical signs of post traumatic stress after events like a shooting in which you were involved. This is a normal part of a person's psychological reaction to having done something: 1) that they knew at some level was wrong (and any moral person would at some level feel even a justified shooting was wrong - maybe not consciously but harming other people is not usually what moral people do in their lives) 2) or done something in a situation in which they felt, even for a moment, helpless 3) or they were in a situation, had things gone otherwise they would have been helpless (such as your gun had malfunctioned in a real scenario and bad guys got the better of you 4) etc...

The thing is, the traumatic event did not have to be related to shooting at all, although it is often related to a real life shooting. The traumatic event could have been something in your childhood, it could have been 9/11, it could have been anything that traumatized you. You do not necessarily realize you have been traumatized if only because life goes on, you live with the event, it gets pushed out of your conscious mind, and then your subconscious lives the guilt trip and expresses itself in these dreams. Be careful because your reactions to such traumas are often expressed in other ways, some could be: shorter temper, looking for more such events (like getting a job as an LEO, a nurse in an ER, a volunteer fireman or paramedic and so on.

Why do you dream of guns even if the traumatic event did not involve you directly, or involve guns in the first place. because they are part of your life now and because they are in your mind an effective way to deal with such events - thing is though your mind does not allow you to deal with them so the guns jam, or bullets fall out of the barrel and so on. Once you cope with whatever is bothering you the dreams either stop or, become much less frequent. When less frequent they usually also become easy to deal with because they often change into you being the winner.

I experienced this for about 6 months after I shot a guy who tried to mug me. It was pretty scary stuff and had waking up in cold sweats, running in my bed to where my legs were all tangled in the sheets, hitting out to where I hit my wife (really it was not intended) or screaming till I woke up. After a few weeks of therapy, the dreams started to subside. I cannot recall the last one I had, but I will admit I had GUN dreams for several years after the shooting - but after the therapy the dreams were not nightmares, or I could control them, or I would wake up before they got bad, or they wound up with me being the winner.

Maybe there are other reasons to have recurrent nightmares about guns, but post traumatic stress is one of them.

Now bear in mind I don't base this just on my one experience; heck I also am studying for my Master's degree in Forensic Psychology. I took a lot of course work geared toward helping victims of trauma, I figured it is about time someone help the victims (including they who may not realize they are a victim such as the cop who shoots a bad guy then suffers for it) instead of the flippin criminals. While I think a lot of psychology is full of bunk, this PTSD thing is for real. So when I retire I may hang a shingle, no bullet holes please.
All the best,
Glenn B

Glenn,

That is deep!

I have a recurring dream where no matter how hard I squeeze the trigger the gun won't fire. I have the same recurring dream with other situations - running as hard as I can and not moving; pressing the accelerator and not moving, you get the picture.

mumbles 45

I dream I come home and my gun safe has been pried open, and its empty. Had that one several times.
And for Mumbles 45, that's not a night mare, we used to do it all the time in high school!! Works on cats too!

Yeah, what Sir Aardvark and win71 said (but only about the safe being pried open on that one! no hamsters) :uhoh:

Most always has to do with them getting stolen....once the house burned. Awful....totally awful nightmares

I have the heavy/impossible trigger pull one quite often. I remember one where I ended up trying to squeeze the trigger with two fingers from each hand and I just couldn't get it back all the way.

I've also had dreams where I needed to rack the slide and I just didn't have enough strength to do it.

Some of the worst dreams mimick real-life fears of ending up in a place where I'll get it major trouble for having brought a gun there.
I've had one a few times where I was in line for airport security and suddenly realized I had my gun on me. For some reason I couldn't get back out of line and it was inevitable that I would be walking through the metal detectors with the gun.
