In the latest American Rifleman mag. they review a FN "Special Police" rifle.
.308, McMillan stock, Harris biod Leuopold Vari-X scope, etc.
Price "As tested" $5,800.
Average five shot groups with three different brands of ammo from a sandbag at 100 yds .75". Smallest group .60", largest 1.09"
On a good day my $400 Savage with a Tasco 3-9x40 and my handloads will beat that.
 
Nope...and I have gotten to be very careful about purchases. Seems like "custom" production house guns continue to climb in cost. Those of us who have had real custom builders to build a rifle know that they are usually half the cost.
 
Dealer cost on the FN runs about $1200. The glass and bipod add something but their price is WAY over what the base gun would sell for. I have one and it is a fine rifle. I like the chrome lined barrel and pre 64 style controlled round feeding. My gun doesn't have the $500 McMillan stock, I don't know what that upgrade costs. My gun will shoot as well as the one in the article, a little better with some handloads.

There are some guns that offer more value than their cost would suggest. I point to anything with the CZ logo on it as an example. Their 527 series of rifles are great.
 
Did they use the words "scout" or "tactical"? The former costs $1300 extra, the latter $1700.

Hrmmm...

Still haven't taken my .300 Whisper Turk to the range (Still waiting on a couple more boxes of ammo to show up.)

I know that the cost of the hand-built rifle (including donor gun, Savage mag, Leupold base & rings, scope, Lilja barrel, Timney trigger, stock, safety, et cetera, ad infinitum, plus all gunsmithing work) still came out to well under a grand...

Caveat emptor, baby.

Nope, I'll have to admit that some of these milsurps that I've gotten (K31 in particular) are worth way more than I've paid for them. Not that I'm complaining mind you, it is just that having a $60 rifle shoot better than you can makes you question all the expensive bells and whistles on some other ones ;) .

I spend a whole lot of time trying to decide what to pick up next. Go for months trying to decide. ONly thing I've ever bought on impulse was my DE .50. SO yea, normally I do.
 
Now, you might have to wait a while, but give folks like Billy Stevens or Jim Borden a call.

Trust me. These guys also do "hunting" rifles - they're not just benchrest smiths. Their "hunting" rifles are modified/assembled, however, with the same attention to detail as their competition rifles...
