Previously I have read many survival web sites. While I do not consider myself a "Survivalist", there are some concepts that I find interesting.
One concept is the make-up of your gun library or your "Arsenal". Basically, this theory follows the "guns are tools and you need different tools for different jobs" line of thinking. Within this there are differnent lines of thinking about caliber diversity vs redundancy, and a lot of other detail we discuss often here on THR. (IE, the best .22 / The Best Shotgun, etc.) I'm not looking for that here.

How many of you have what you consider a complete set? (You dont need to make an itemized list).

Here is what I consider a complete set. (I dont have all these, but I am working toward it, kind of...)
1. .22 rifle
2. 12 ga shotgun,
3. semi-auto center fire rifle,
4. high power bolt action or lever action,
5. long range (Scoped rifle),
6. .22 handgun,
7. Center fire Handgun.

I am pretty sure I could supply a small army by your standards, only problem is they would all have to carry a triple load of ammo, oh well at least all MY troops will be supplied:evil:

Yep, I don't consider that list as a "complete set." I'd call it a starter set, a bare bones basic assortment. Nevertheless, it is adequate from a "survivalists" point of view. Although I would think that items 4 and 5 are duplicates.

I had those bases covered fifty years ago. I've added a few since then.

I'm not worried about a complete library. I'm more concerned with being as capable as I can with what I have.

hows your MRE supply?

+1

IMO too many people focus too much time and money on guns/ammo... need to think about basics like cold weather gear, tents, food, water purification, medical supplies, etc.

If you think you have a complete set, you aren't wasting enough time thinking about frivelous things related to guns.

Do you have a shower gun? What about a beach gun? A swimming party gun? How about a saltwater beach gun?

If one of your guns covers two or more of these categories, you need to think long and hard about your failures as a thorough gun owner.

(satire) ;)

I have more guns than any one man would ever need or even be able to use...but I still buy more.

As the song goes..." I've got a shotgun, a rifle, and a 4 wheel drive"...."and I'd like to pit some Beech Nut in that dudes eyes and shoot him with my ole 45"...

"A shotgun, a rifle, and a 4 wheel drive"...."and my ole 45"
Shotgun for home defense, rifle to put meat on the table, .45 for personal defense, everything else is bonus, if the cash is there and the price is right, congrats.

Speaking of extra cash... "hows your MRE supply?"

Wayullll... It's one thing, and a good start to be able to say "I have this and that gun; scads of ammo, and a spare bedroom filled with all manner of stuff I'll need", but a strong injection of PMS is called for here. Yes, Please Make Sense!
How you gonna' haul all of this stuff, and where you gonna' haul it to, and who's gonna' help with all of this haulin' and using?
In the real world, One needs to share a contact list with 5 reliable buddies, and in a SHTF situation, the five (or more) of you need to be able to count this collection among you, with appropriate offensive duplication as necessary.
The inventory changes from one locale to another, but your group should be able to prevail for at least 2 weeks. Longer than that, and we really are dealing with a total breakdown of society, and the scenario changes by quite a lot.
I started a thread awhile ago that was meant to elicit responses to things like this, What can go wrong? We really do need to consider this.
Heaven forbid, but you can be sure that there are many very capable people who plan on shortening the political career of the Pres. elect. If anything nasty should happen to him, there certainly will be havoc in the homeland. Are you prepared to oppose roving armed gangs?
The economic situation is bound to worsen, and no-one knows by how much. If unemployment goes to 20%, you need to expect that there will be bands of desperate people who raid the homes of the better off with a very well defined purpose. Are you prepared to deal with them?
Carjacking. It would be very well to work with friends, and arrange to travel everywhere with someone literally riding shotgun.
There's a lot more, and this is why we should be discussing just what a "full set" is in the real world possibilities that each of us are likely to deal with in the next 6 mos.

I need # 3 on your list than I will have them all.
You also need to stock up on ammo

I need at least one more.

I need a carry weapon for my wife. Thinking about a p3at.

I'd also like to add one of those inexpensive 6-8 shot maverick or mossberg 12ga shotguns and a Remington 700 or similar bolt action rifle.

The high power rifle and the long range gun can overlap in your scenario.

The way I see it you need (in no real particular order but the first one):

a good defensive handgun. Ever thought of what should happen if you and your sthf group walk down main st. with ar, ak and the sort? When all else fails, I want 1 handgun that I can conceal.

Center fire auto loading rifle. Yaaa the AR and AK get to come. Seriously, I chose the AR for light ammo, if were heading out by truck, train, plain, air boat, ect... the whole bunch and all the ammo are gona come, but not at the expense of food, water, & shelter. Besides, just the thought of eating 7.62X39 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner makes my rear pucker.

Someone needs to have a shotgun or two in the group. The most effective zombie slaying gun around cant be left at home during the apolicpise; are you nucking futs you newb?

A .22 rifle / handgun Kind of self explanatory, but dirt cheap and can put food on the rock / table quietly.

Last would be a long range / high power rifle. I don't think zombies have a queen, so why would we be sniping? Do you really want to shoot a deer at 1400 yds with a .338 mag? If so please let me know so I can go steel it while you walking up to it. Even better, now that my group knows where you are at and where you are going AMBUSH!!!!

Now time for my coffie :D:D

OP hit the nail on the head as far as my outlook for my collection. Each one is for a specific purpose. That has been my mindset since my very first firearm. I've put together a nice 'library' so far.

I'm working on it, but not there yet.
Neet one or two good 5.56's and a couple more 12ga. shotguns, couple of .22 semi's, a .223, a 30-06... well as you can see, I've got some work to do before I'm there.

I need at least one more.
This should always be the case.

All I need is 3,4,&5. But me thinks I can accomplish this by buying either one of these.

All of my firearms are purpose-specific. It just kinda worked out that way. Moreover, I made an attempt to full multiple roles with one firearm when I could.

I'm set up as follows:

Mid/Long Range Precision:

LR-308 with Leupold Mark IV 3.5-10x40
This is also my hunting rifle.

"SHTF"/Lightweight/HD

Reece-style M4gery with 1:7 twist and M4 ramps with Millet DMS-1 1-4x22

Hunting/HD

Remington 870 Turkey 12 gauge with 21" Barrel and Rem-Chokes
Short enough for HD, chokes allow for hunting.

Small-Bore/Precision

Ruger 10/22 highly modified for precision w/ Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 and BUIS.

SD Handgun for me:

RIA 1911A1 .45ACP

SD Handgun for wife:

Glock 19 9mm

The only additions that I have to this set-up are "wants" rather than needs.

They include:

Rock River .458 SOCOM AR-15 upper.
Stoeger 12 gauge double-barrel coach gun
H&R .45-70 for Primative weapons season

I realize that this is a gun forum, so I'll not hijack with the discussion that 99% of the things you need to worry about is NOT firearms related. If you want a deeper discussion of all the other concerns, please visit:

Zombiehunters.org

for a serious discussion of SHTF concerns.
