Do you have sub-sets in your gun collection?

So I picked up a new to me gun today, which will be for a different thread. But it rounded out a sub-set in my collection of guns. It is older CZ pistols, but it got me thinking about some of the other threads about gun collecting.

We all have our preferences and sone people really like a particular type of gun, or action type, or caliber or whatever. I know a guy that has a huge Colt revolver collection and a hunting rifle, a skeet gun, and a carry gun. And thats the extent of his guns. I also think I remeber a thread on here, where one of the members here has like $80,000 in 1911's.

But I was wondering if any of you guys are more like me. With sub sets in your collection. For example, I like Walthers and com-bloc guns. So I have several Walthers and several Maks. For a while, revolvers were a sub-set in my collection, but that is changing (also for another thread). So I'd like to hear about some of your sub-sets in ypur collection. And pictures are always nice too. Heres one of mine.

Nothing I've got huge numbers of, but several things I really like:

1911s, especially blued ones that have classic aesthetics but modern parts and 10mm ones
S&W revolvers - blued, full under-barrel lug designs (586, full lug 29, 17-6 etc.)
Magnum M70s (and MRC clones)
Miroku 1886/71s in the long calibers (.45-90, .40-82, .50-110, .475 Turnbull etc.)

Those are things I'm always interested in when they come along.

kind of if this counts I have always did the 2 is 1 and one is none with my firearms so I have pairs and in some cases triplets of the same caliber and a few of same model in same caliber
example I have 2 Ruger SBH , 2 M&P sports , 3 Glock 23's , 2 bushmaster "windham" rifles and so on....... thats what makes this cool its what makes you
happy no set rules and with the low prices on some stuff right now temptation is wearing me down

So...I collect old guns (mostly), then there's the subset for military surplus, then there's the subset for US martial guns, then there's the subsets for 1903 Springfield's (3) and M1 carbines (3).
On the commercial pistol side I have a nice little Smith and Wesson subset (9) and SIG subset (4).....:)

Right now my bolt-action milsurp subsets include Finns (mostly M/N variations), US 03A3s, a 1903 and a Krag, British SMLEs and Lee-Metfords, Italian 1891 variants, Japanese Arisakas, French MAS 36s, Mausers from all over the world, Bubba's Unloved Mutants of the above types, and period hunting rifles of all calibers from the last century and a half.
-And that's just the bolt actions.
Then there's the black powder long and short guns, 1911s, military 9s and 9ks, concealables, oddities, lever guns, pistol-caliber carbines, and a small bunch of martial shotguns, mostly repros.
Yep. Sets and subsets.

yeah sort of. i dont have tons of anything in particular, but i have always had a thing for long barrel large caliber revolvers. .41-.50 cal.
I tend to prefer the double action ones over single action in most cases. though i have a few singles actions and i have a few midlength and short barrels and even a couple 357 mags. so you might consider my long barrels a sub set.
i am also partial to deep shiney blueing and fancy wood. i also like polished stainless steel. Nickel is fine, so is a smooth matte stainless, its the "other" finishes I have never cared for.
i also am partial to full size 1911s. those would be my other subset i suppose, though I have less of those than the big revolvers. my favorite looking gun would be my minty Blue 29-2 with the 8 3/8" barrel. that would be the standard by which i judge the others that enter the stable.

I have several "sub-sets". One is pre-war .22 auto pistols. Another is .22 single shot pistols that resemble autos. Also pre-ww2 military firearms and lots of miscellaneous stuff.....
I actually call them a collection of collections.
My main criteria is that they have to be older then I am. (and I'm pre-WW2)

I don’t have many guns so my initial thought was no. But as I thought about it, pistol, rifle and shotgun game to mind. Then carry and range guns, then competition guns, and SHTF guns. So I guess even with a growing collection, we all have groups that we get.

I have 1911's, revolvers, 10-22's, and AR-15's, so I guess you could say I have subsets.

IMO that's what a lot of gun collecting is about. SWMBO doesn't really get it, "you already have fifty of those!" doesn't fly when you've found a variant you don't have. It's an obsession, or a disease.

Right! I'm trying to avoid going completely off the deep end on M1 carbines- there are so many manufacturers to track down and find......
Then I found a guy online who is trying to collect and classify all the variations of carbine MAGAZINES!!! :what:

I feel a little better.

No, not really in the collector's sense but I do have a certain fondness for 1911s and single action revolvers. You could probably consider my concealed carry guns as a kind of sub-set. Other than that I just buy what I like without any thought about having a set of something.

Sure do but the major part of my collection is with S&W revolvers.
When I buy one of a kind I have to have another.
I picked up a new Beretta Cougar many years ago, liked it so I bought the 8045 to go along with it, now a 92s is in the collection as well. I’m sure as time goes on a few more Berettas will be added to the list.
I pick up things I like as I go, find something of interest and get a good price on it I grab it.

Just buy cartridge really. When I decide I like a cartridge I tend to buy a small, a medium, and a large gun that all chamber the same cartridge.

I've got a thing for .22's. I have 11 of them counting rifles and handguns, and there's several more I'd to own.

I have gathered a collection of S&W stainless revolvers (7) and got on a kick buying Bauer (Fraser, Browning) .25 autos. I have ten of these. I had several working shotguns, but had to downsize so I'm down to three.

My main collecting and shooting interest , would surely be S&W revolvers. Pre War to the 1990's or so. I have a nice collection with an array of .22 Kit Guns, J frames, K's, CS-1 L frames, and a mess of N frames.

BUT I also have an interest in .22 Target autos as I shot Bullseye way back in the day. So have a few M-41/46 Smiths, half a dozen High Standards, etc.

Another BUT....I love BHP's so have at least ONE at all times. ALSO have another love for 1911's so have 4 or 5 of those. Was a big 007 fan as a kid, so of Course have a Walther PPK. Saw way too many Cowboy shows as a kid so have a nice Colt SAA in .45 colt. Like to hunt with a handgun TOO , so have a trio of Freedom Arms revolvers. Always liked the 10mm round ,so have a trio of M- 1000 series Smith Gen 3 autos. Gotta have at least a Det Special and a Python/Diamondback to round out the Colt side TOO.

Recently I got going on CZ autos. My initial 75b then turned into a PO1, then a Shadow 2 and recently a 75 compact. Fairly satisfied now though. But I do like them and finding an older pre B 75 would be cool. It never stops does it? LOL.

Thankfully I don't collect rifles or shotguns! STILL have too many of those using them as hunting /varmint/target guns.

I have a few friends with amazing collections....One guy a life long interest in Winchesters, another S&W's, the third Colt SAA's and Winchester levers. HIS collection is borderline out of hand. His sub set is an outstanding collection of Sharps rifles, originals, many with buffalo hunting provenance. So I'm not nearly as "out of hand" as a few I know.

Then again if I had the financial means....Oh Man.

FN in MT,
I would like to have a collection of those 10xx series S&W autos as well. If money would allow. Sadly I'll have to settle for only having a 1086, for now.

Saw a 1006 on IIRC the SIG forum? Or maybe on S&W Forum...just a few days ago....with 4 mags and original box SITTING there for $850!

I've got a 1026, 1076 and a 1006. All three in original boxes, but all 3 shooters. My only regret is not buying magazines when they were not only CHEAP, but AVAILABLE. Not any more. I see them at shows going for $100 or more...and they DO sell. Wish mec gar or someone would start making them again...but I doubt it.

Your 1086 is a good one! Second lowest production number variation, with a mere 1660 built! Not a bad one to have if you only have one.

Big Glocks and little Glocks. That's about it. ;) Oh, and a full sized Vaquero, and a birdshead...

Wow, $850 aint bad at all. Especially with 4 mags. Thats almost half the price right there.
