I got thinking the other day(always dangerous). I can't rattle off in my head exactly what guns I have. I have to go get in the safe and get out the inventory sheet.

This is not a brag, just something I realized.

How about you? Do you know off the top of your head? Or do you have to go look or get out a list?

Not asking folks to list thier inventories, as it's none of my business. I am just curious how many are like me?

Porcupine Sex

You gotta be careful when you attempt this.... I get the creeps when I even think about making a list, but since I live in ill inois I can be paranoid. I'm even spooked by your mention of a list, that is to say if I had guns would I make a list and by extension would it be comprehensive and where could I keep it if the black helicopters descend? List, guns, whattya mean????

A few years ago, I knew off the top of my head exactly what I had. Then my dad passed away, and within a year my older brother did, too. Then we got a decent pay raise and I paid off all my bills, so I have more $ to buy my own, and *THEN* my wife took an interest in guns.:D :D Now I need a list. Good thing one of the items dad left me was a huge safe.

one day i will be able to do that but as of right now, i can name every single gun i own, where i bought it and how much i paid for it. i only have 6 though lol

It is good to keep a list of what you have along with serial numbers just in case your guns are ever stolen. I have taken reports from people who had no idea what brand some of their guns were much less the serial numbers.

The serial number on your gun is not unique among all firearms. Lets say you have a rifle with serial number 1000 another person may have a rifle with the serial number 1000 but his rifle is a Reminston and yours was a Savage. Serial number only is worthless.
If the police are to enter your weapon as stolen in NCIC they need the make and the serial number. A stolen remington bolt action is not enough information. Serial number 12345 is not enough. You need both.

I have marked my weapons in places that Joe Crack Head will never look for. Some markings are small some are not but all are hidden somewhere on the firearm. Always use a mark that identifies the owner and can be verified. If you use "Bubba" or "Jr" these will indicate that the weapon belongs to 25% of redneck america. Use your drivers license number it can be checked by police anywhere. Don't mark your property with social security numbers as this number cannot be verified through social security even by police.

I'm like you. I could list the model and number of peices of most of them, but odds are very good that I'd forget a couple. Happened to me a while back when I ran into a good deal on a couple of Czech rifles. Said to myself "self, you don't have any of those, and you've wanted one for a while, but since it's such a good deal you should get 'em both." So I did. After I got done entering the specifics and checking them over, I went to put them in the storage area. I shuffled a few things around to get them in the way I wanted them, and lo and behold, there was one of the very model sitting right there....

I was fine with 2 safes and knew pretty much what I had last year. Then I got married. And she's a gunnie. Now both safes are overflowing, We really need a third one. As of right now I really don't know without looking just what is in there.

As far as the list, I do keep one(secure spot, off site) for insurance purposes. It lists finishes, barrel lengths, calibers, serial numbers, and approximate values.

Nope, I would have to print off the inventory list. Now if you ask if I have a specific gun I could tell you yes or no (most likely) without the list.

sadly, I know exactly what I have. :(

I read/hear about these lucky Bastages who were just looking for something in the safe and, "forgot I had one of those."

I do keep a list with SN's, prices, purchase date, and where I got it on an excel spread sheet. I also have digital pics of the gun and its SN. I also have scans of the bill of sale. I also have the same for all the spendy accessories.

I keep it on an encrypted area of the HD, on 2 1 gig flash drives that are in our GET bags, and on some encrypted CD's in the fire safe. I do that for all our insurable things. I need to get a smaller more durable flash drive to carry with me with that stuff. Instant police/insurance report.

Honestly, I don't. The safes are overflowing and there are a bunch of low dollar guns stashed in places even I would have trouble finding..Essex

I do. I do have trouble listing them though.

I also knew most of my serial numbers. Now I only bother with carry guns.

I only have 5, so not many to remember. What I consider more impressive is I can tell you which are DAO, SAO or SA/DA, what has a decocker, what has a drop catch, what has a safety, how many rounds are in each magazine, how many rounds are loaded (including the chambered one), and yadda yadda yadda. Going from one to the other and manipulating each one correctly without fault is something I like to practice. That's what I call knowing your guns. :)

well

If you know all of the guns you own then you do not have enough.

I humbly disagree. . . it seems you are saying that a.) if you have a bad memory you have enough guns or b.) if you have a really good memory or check and clean weapons often then you need more.

Hey wait, maybe that is true. . . .

:D

I doubt that I could name them all without missing some.

Right now I'm not even sure if I have 15 or 16 Makarovs because I bought several and gave a friend one.

But since all the info is kept in several safe places I don't worry about it.:)

Guns?

Who said I own guns?

Since that boating accident, and those gifts, and the ones that were borrowed that I lost track of, . . .

No idea. None at all.

Damn things are more trouble . . .

Nope. None here.

At least, not that I can remember.
