SI was having a conversation with someone recently about letting people borrow guns. I have in the past let coworkers borrow hunting rifles so they could go hunting with family members, I have a good friend that's had my .22 Browning for several years, I let one friend borrow a pistol for a few months when he sent his normal carry gun into have some custom work done to it. I let a cousin borrow a small .38 when moved to "the city" for a year or so, until she could afford her own.

So I guess it's not really a big deal to me, assuming I know the person. But the guy I was talking to thought I was insane, he was of the "never under conditions, to anyone" train of thought.

It just got me to thinking, I wonder how most other people think of this.

If in the "no, never" crowd I'd love to know if it's mainly because of your potential liability in something they could do with the gun, or if its concern about not getting your gun back.

I used to, but an incident lead me to re-evaluate who I should be lending things to. :what:

Make sure to be selective of who you let borrow anything, let alone firearms.

I've had friends loan guns out and it always ended badly for him. No, I would not lend a gun to anyone.

I would to someone I trusted.

I make it a point to have at least few friends I do trust.

So far, however, I have not had one need to borrow one from me. Anyone I trust enough with a firearm already has some.

I have not, but there are some I would definitely loan to if there were a need. Those that I wouldn't loan to are simply less gunworthy than trustworthy.

Aren't we always arguing that the gun is an object like any other? I wouldn't loan out a circular saw without prior instruction to these friends either.

I will loan, but only to certain trusted people and ONLY while I am there in person during use.

I have a few good friends who I would have loaned my firearms to without worry.
A while back I asked a friend of mine to store a few long guns for me that didn't fit in my safe, while I was out of town for a week...same difference.
Definitely good to have quality friends.

Now that is all in the past here.

It seems the State of Washington would rather see my firearms sitting unwatched and unsecured in an unoccupied house while I am gone.

1. I have a few friends that I can absolutely trust.

2. I have a few guns that are quite serviceable, but not really special or valuable.

If one of my trustworthy friends suddenly had an opportunity to shoot a deer, but no appropriate rifle, I would absolutely let them use my .30-30.

No, I wouldn't lend out an heirloom or anything rare. No, I wouldn't lend out my Marlin 39. No, I wouldn't do anything that's guaranteed to ruin a valuable relationship.

I have friends who are more valuable to me than a rifle I got at a pawnshop.

I have loaned guns out . Just did so this last month so my nephews son could use it to get his CCW.

Not for years however. That is not loaning, that is giving.

I let people use my guns but I know them well. Just this week a friend loaned me his shotgun because he wasn't going to get to shoot it this week.

Sure.

I mean not to random people off the street, but friends, family, coworkers, folks I know and like.

It's a tool, I lend it to the same folks I would lend my impact wrench, or other tools to. It's not like I'll be without.

I haven't, but short answer, I would/could. Circumstances dictating.

There are people I would loan a gun to if they asked, and then there is a larger group I would loan a gun to in an...emergency situation...if they asked, some I could possibly even offer to, depending on the situation.

I wish I had bought multiples of the $135 excellent condition SKS rifles a decade ago, though...or maybe a covey of super inexpensive LEO trade in pistols in in a service cartridge at some point...but I could scrounge up a semi auto rifle and a pistol or two or whatever if need be, that would be adequate for many uses, and not be junk, that I could go without.

There are only two people I'd ever load a gun to, but both those guys already own guns of their own, and have never had a reason to ask.
