Do you like Dick's Sporting Goods?

Boy, if that is what is going on here, there's going to be a lot of people out of work at Dick's. LOL

 

Their sales on "budget" guns (Savage package rifles, bead blast finished 870s, etc...) can be pretty good....

Can get center fire rifle ammo. for decent prices in the fall...

I picked up a Stack On RSC there on sale and haven't seen that price matched yet...

Some clerks know something, some don't...

Don't go looking for a rifle chambered for .308 there as that's a "scarey military sniper" cartridge, unsuitable for Elmer Fudd and like respectable company.

Dicks.... it is what it is....

Glad I have better options just as close....

also glad Dick's hasn't gone the way of Wally World and dumped firearms.

 

The closest Dick's is in Lexington, KY, and I have visited both stores there. They seem to be pretty decent sports stores if you are into golf (I'm not), tennis, or a myriad of other athletic activities, but very mediocre for the hunting/fishing crowd. Absolutely worthless for the non-hunting gun crowd. Unfortunately, the Sportsman's Warehouse there didn't make the cut last year. Fortunately, though, Bud's Gun Shop is close by.

 

They've had good prices on ammo lately at the store near me (Fair Lakes, Fairfax, Va). Before the holidays, I picked up a Remi 870 28" shotgun. After all the rebates and discounts, it cost me around $230. Deals can be found there, just have to look. If you're looking for a specific firearm, you can probably find better deals elsewhere.

 

actually i just went to dick's. took me 2 seconds to grab what i needed, and 10 minutes to wait in line because they have to sign up everyone with their stupid "sports card". that's so annoying!

 

I just do not want to drive forty miles out of my way to find it's like Big 5. I have come to trust the understandings that people have come to on this website. As for Dicks, it appears I doubt I will make the drive. Basspro with all its lookyloos is closer.

 

I can get brownies and coffee at BassPro

 

If they have what I'm looking for, they're great, because there are several in CT and one the next town over from me, but...

They usually DON'T have what I am looking for so my preference is to travel the hour to East Hartford and shop at Cabela's.

 

Dick's, Scheels, Cabela's, Gander Mountain, etc. are all high priced. They all basically charge full MSRP on guns.

The only way to get a deal is to watch for sales, wait for coupons or join some member club and build up points.

Cabela's seems to be the best for having sales on their guns.

 

nice place for overpriced yuppie campus fashions and wannabe sports hero gear.

$79 for an underarmor longsleeve tee will not get you in the NFL or summer olympics.

 

My answer is NO! Gosh I miss G.I. Joes, so sad that crappy Overpriced Dicks took over a store that had better selection and better prices. The one in the town I live is absolutely awful and sterile.

 

I'm a fairly regular customer at Dicks. Never bought a long gun there. They don't carry handguns in any store I have visited. They have some fairly good sales and if you don't have another store locally for yuppy outdoor stuff, Dicks is the place!

 

Never going again. I've been to several in the Denver metro area.
If you happen to mention 9mm ammo, they get their panties in a tight wad.
HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I swear they only hire Democrats.
You're fine if you shoot only ducks, but if it comes to self defense weapons or ammo, they are so full of bull manure.. Otherwise, they're just like someone else said, a Soccor Mom's store.
They'll sell .223 and 7.69, but they keep it locked up in a bottom drawer where you can't find it unless you specifically ask for it. But don't mention what it's for. Also their prices are outrageous.

 

Oh yeah, their sales people at Crocker Park in Westlake, OH have been incredibly useless. I once had to ask for help with handgun ammo THREE times, all the while with the guy from the hunting department standing their in sight shooting the bull with somebody about a fishing reel. He didn't even have the decency to say, "I'll help you when I"m done with this customer."

 

I always have to round up a sales person as the sporting goods dept is never busy and there is never anyone behind the counter. Once I find someone I get as good service as anywhere else. I don't expect them to be knowledgable and I am never disappointed but from what I read about Wally that is the case as well. We don't have a Bass ProShop and if we did I wouldn't frequent it based on the experience I had at the one in Branson, MO; we don't have a Cabela's. The Gander Mountains are OK for the occasional deal on a firearm but I have never had any luck there on reloading supplies and the staff are hard to take in large doses; never used the smith services as I could never get a commitment from them on how long to do something as simple as drill and tap a tang for a tang sight.

 

No. I do not like them.

 

How is it hypocrisy to sell handgun ammo but not handguns? There's only so much space in one store for things.

What's next, complaining that NTB sells tires but doesn't sell cars? I mean come on, they're profiting off tire sales, but won't sell you a car? Pfft.

 

Academy stores have more of a selection of handguns and firearms than Dicks. They cater more to uniforms and sports equipment.

They just recently came into my area and I like them overall their firearms section is thin but I did get a deal on a Rossi .22lr/.410 combo a while back. Firearms are generally overpriced and their coupons are not good on guns. However there cleaning section is pretty good.

 

The display cases at my local Dick's that now keep me away from the long guns are rather empty. They used to be full of handguns when it was Galyan's. And they used to be configured sideways so we could walk past and handle the long guns. Instead of having to squint at prices and flag down a rare worker to take a look at a gun.

Plenty of room for handguns. Dick's chooses not to carry them. That's their choice. As it is my choice to not go there often.

 

Fine selection for random sports type stuff, not so great gun related stuff. Biggest issue is getting anyone to help you. Have tried to get help several times at stores around the San Antonio area without success when I'm actually wanting to buy stuff. Really not worth going into the store anymore as there are many other places that are easier to shop at.

My general impression is that they have been on an expansion plan over the last year or two, lots of new stores opening in Texas. Certainly nothing to distinguish them from existing sporting goods stores and service is definitely sub par. Won't be surprised to see stores shutting down in another year or two.

 

They are OK.

They have terrific prices on ammo when they have a sale, average the rest of the time. Selection is fair.

Guns? No handguns (around here anyway) and they only have "sporting" guns in long arms. If you want a hunting rifle in a standard caliber (.223, 30-06, .270, .243 and sometimes .308) you are in luck. If you want a .22lr or a shotgun, you are in luck. You want an AR, or even a Mini-14, you need to go elsewhere. Their prices are usually pretty good, and when they are having a sale their prices can be great.

Tents? Their name brand tents suck, the main name brand they carry is Coleman (i.e. they are fine for the average family, but not for serious campers). Similar deal with other camping equipment.

Fishing? They have a nice selection of fishing gear.

General sporting goods? They may not have a lot of any one thing, but they carry a little of everything (weights, baseball gear, soccer gear, swimming gear, lax gear, etc.)

Service? Like any big box store they don't pay much, many people are young students or working a second job, and quality of service can be all over the place (I've walked out after waiting for help with ammo for 30min and no joy, I've had some great experiences with people at the gun/ammo counter). Being specifically a sporting goods store that includes outdoors "stuff", they tend to get people into sports and/or the outdoors who apply, thus some of their employees actually do know their stuff.

Being that most sporting goods stores no longer service the shooting sports, I do like to occasionally stop in and buy something. I often buy ammo there, and I've bought a shotgun and a rifle there. If we support them, they are more likely to continue stocking such items. The more that stock such items the better (this is why I occasionally swallow my pride and buy ammo from Walmart as well despite generally hating Walmart).

 

It's not worth going out of your way for, but I have one close so I go on occasion.

If you check out the weekly ad, you can sometimes find decent prices on pump guns and muzzleloaders.

 

The one's near me in Colorado have decent athletic gear, but there are much better big box sportsman's stores including Gander Mtn, Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro Shops that I have never bought any firearms or hunting related gear from Dicks.
