Senator Mitch McConnell is the Senate majority leader. He is getting a lot of pressure to bring background check bills and other gun control measures to the floor for a vote when the Senate is back in session in September.

Send him a quick message (link below) to urge him not to bring forward more gun control bills. Takes only a minute.

I am not the most eloquent writer, but done.

"Please oppose any new regulations concerning Red Flag Laws, Universal Background Checks, or any of the other numerous proposals that have been proven time and time again to have no discernible effect on crime. These proposals are a knee-jerk reaction to recent mass shootings, that are incorrectly portrayed in the media as being more frequent. At the same time, none of the proposals would have prevented these tragedies. We need to focus more on identifying and punishing the individuals that commit these crimes, and less on the tools they choose to use. Thank you for your time."

Simply bringing these things up before the Senate is not the same as approving them. McConnell knows what he is doing. It may be as simple as letting some Senators blow off steam rather than keeping it all bottled up.

Still, no better time to let them know how we feel on the matter, since they are already discussing it.

McConnell will block antigun bills but he will not push progun bills. He likes the status quo as it is to his electoral benefit and that of his party.

Not only that but I have also contacted my US Rep. Bryan Steil and all the Republican members of the Wisconsin state Senate and State Assembly.

Agreed that now is the time to bombard Sen. McConnell if for nothing more than to show him support and to encourage the fight and not get Weak Kneed. Our President seems to be sending mixed messages.

You're right about being time to hold their feet to the fire.

President Trump came on pretty strong after Broward county but held the line when it came time for the vote. Remember, he wrote "The Art of the Deal".

He also used executive action to put an illegal law into place by banning possession of a common item (bump stocks), without grandfathering, which is called an Ex Post Facto law. These Ex post facto laws are expressly forbidden by the United States Constitution in Article 1, Section 9, Clause 3 (with respect to federal laws). So while he's still better than the alternative, he is NOT on our side unless it is advantageous to him. Luckily for us, we are his voter base so hopefully we can reel him back in.

As you undoubtedly know we already have sufficient background checks for firearm purchases. I feel that background checks on private purchases only serve to start the implementation of a national registry. In the same vein, so-called Red Flag Laws must have robust due process representation or they can, and will, be misused. I am completely against any and all weapons and magazine bans as well. I am a loyal Republican voter and this is my one issue.

Done. This is what I wrote.
Senator,
I implore you to not allow universal background checks and red flag laws to come up for a floor vote as most, if not all the mass shooters passed a federal background check before purchase. These new proposals are nothing more than a left wing attempt at back door registration of law abiding gun owners and a further attempt at disarming freedom loving Americans like you and I.

Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.

Bill Cornwell

Done. He may be able to hold things off till the election. Or, if something does move forward maybe it will be sane and address some things which may actually have a chance of reducing crime (like enforcing the current laws).

Here’s the reply I received from McConnell:

Thank you for contacting me. Our country is mourning the senseless acts of violence in El Paso and Dayton. My prayers remain with the victims of this terrible violence, their families and friends, and the brave first responders who charged into harm’s way.

Following these horrific shootings, President Trump called on Congress to work in a bipartisan manner to help prevent future acts of violence. I have asked several Senate Committees to work on bipartisan solutions to help protect our communities and preserve our constitutional rights. It was serious, bipartisan work that led to last year’s successful passage of the Fix NICS Act and the STOP School Violence Act.

The Fix NICS Act requires the records of people prohibited from owning a gun to be entered into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) to make sure the system is more accurate, while also protecting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. This legislation also allows people whose names are incorrectly in the database to appeal to get their names out of the system. The STOP School Violence Act provides federal funding for school safety programs and evidence-based technology and equipment to improve school security to help prevent school violence. Only through serious, bipartisan, bicameral efforts will we be able to continue this important work and produce further legislation that can pass the Senate, pass the House, and earn the President’s signature. Partisan theatrics and campaign-trail rhetoric will only take us farther away from the progress Kentuckians and all Americans deserve.

I remain fully committed to working with my colleagues in the U.S. Senate to continue to put forth policies that will help make our communities safer and protect our constitutional rights. I will be sure to keep your thoughts and concerns in mind throughout that process.

MITCH McCONNELL

UNITED STATES SENATOR
It’s even more generic than I expected, and I’m an actual constituent.

The one thing that angers me is not being able to contact a US Representative from my own state if I do not live in their district. Here in Wisconsin we have 8, Five are Republican and three are Democrat. I feel on an issue such as gun control were a bill is coming to the US House I should be able to contact all eight and voice my opinion as they are all going to be voting on it. Maybe I am wrong in my thinking but that is what I believe.

But the reality is that 7 of them will not care about your opinion since they are not in your district so you can not vote for them .

And this is why we are were we are today because too many actually believe this and I suppose in some areas this may actually be true. I have sent letters to 3 State Senators and have received a response from 2 of them. One was not from my district. Have also wrote to all 5 of the Republican Assembly persons and have also received responses from two of them. I really didn't expect this many responses and though they all may have been answered by staffers not one was a Form Letter.

So if you do not believe writing will achieve anything then don't write but then at the same time don't complain either.
