I use one on my slug shotgun, and have used it on other short range deer rifles with success. It's quicker than irons or scope at close range in cover. I'molder and far sighted so irons aren't as good for me as they were when I was young. I like scopes for longer range weapons.
Reddot so simple a caveman..scratch that so simple a 6&7 yo boy can use them.
I picked a reddot from gander mountain 40mm 4moa 50 bucks for my sons new 7mm08. I limit him to 75yds and under so it's a perfect sight. He took a button buck this evening and the only help I gave him was cocking it and telling him pick one of the deer and put the dot on it just like with the Wii. He shot and it traveled 20 yards before piling up. I picked the reddot on this rifle because it weigh 5.5# and is really short so I didn't want him braded in the eye with a scope.
He took one last year with another of my carbines except topped with an aimpoint micro T1 clone when he was 6 years old.
When I don't have to worry about him busting his eye, and if the gander unit doesn't fail I'll probably move it over to a turkey gun.
Eotecs are good I have two. Be sure to put NEW batteries in before your hunt. They have a tendency to drain when needed most. Good at least to 100 meters and fast on target.
Burris Fastfire II..... Probably one of the nicest and fastest "1 power" red dots on the market. I own one and it is very very fast.
If you aren't stuck on 1 power.... try a Millet DMS-1 in 1-4 power. It has a lite Circle/Dot that is hard to beat. I have three of those scopes. For their size they are heavy.
I have a 44 mag with a red dot on it. Taken several deer over the years with it. Always take it in my tree stand for something that might wander in to around 50-75 yards...
