Does anyone carry 2 magazines taped or coupled in any way in their AR type rifle? I have been under the impression for all my shooting life that the weight put undue stress on the Mag release, and therefore, it was a bad idea to do. Today, I had a guy who claimed to be a PD armorer(sp) tell me that this was untrue, so I thought I'd see what you folks had to say on the matter.

I did for years on the Army's rifles. It worked fine untill I banged the taped mag on a tree and bent the feed lips. Went for a reload, and got an instant malfunction. Luckily the result was only my MILES gear beeping, but it was annoying.

If it's true that it causes problems, then you should avoid Beta-C drums too, right? They weigh as much as three mags taped together...

It's not so much a mag well issue as a dirt and mechanics issue.

The two magazines need a minimum space between them or the magazines will bind in the well and need to be hauled out, no reliable drop free.

Open top mags attract dirt, mud, leaves and other assorted cack like a magnet.

Dropping, falling, running around like a loon means your more likely to pop rounds loose off the top of the open mag as well etc.

All likely to lead to reliability or feed issues.
