Douglas County Schools buy AR-15's!

This is in rural Colorado, west of Denver. Some of the parents have wet their diapers over this decision, but a lot of others are applauding it.

We all know that "gun free zone" signs work really well.

 

A very rare acknowledgement of reality in an increasingly liberal state. Until I just looked at a map, I did not realize how rural an area Dougco covered.

As an aside, we are nearing retirement age and have been looking for more American areas to which to move. Points south of the liberal den of iniquity that is the Denver Metro might be worth considering instead of moving out of state entirely. It looks like there are plenty of Americans in Dougco.

 

I recommend the Springs. Quite conservative down there.

 

to me, this is a really sad day in America, that some schools got to that point , that they need to be protected like we live in Israel.
Israelis at least know ( mostly) who their enemies are, here - it is wackos among us

Im hopeful that maybe schools are starting to shed off the PC hoplophobia.

 

Very limited usefulness in stopping an active shooter since they wont be available immediately. People in the school already with any gun is much better than a rifle locked in the trunk. If only there was a vetting process where people could voluntarily get training and background checks to carry firearms...

 

I think the bigger/better news is the Fresno County CA school district that is allowing staff to go armed in school.

Cooldill: having bought my first AK derivatives since February--two Saiga rifles, now a Maadi "ARM"-- I agree from one perspective.

But without Tech Sights added to AKs (combo Tech Sight/dust cover), would most people do better with rifles already equipped with aperture sights?

Congrats to that school district for facing reality, and also understanding what possible deterrence can be.

 

Last time I was in CO. Squad cars setting up around a school in Louisville? Lafayette? IIRC Some kid called in a bomb threat in order to prevent his girl from getting into a fight??
IMO it was dang THIN coverage of Police. One per corner, couple by main enterance.
Thing is I didn't see ANY students evacuated.. Maybe they were waiting for buses? I don't know.
Glad they are getting tools on rare chance they are needed.

 

They might be effective enough tools if our fine officers have the time to get to them in time to help mitigate the damage.

 

I used to live in Douglas County, and it does have a lot of rural, but also very suburban which is pretty high density with a lot of liberal transplants like in Highlands Ranch, and Lone Tree. I lived in Lone Tree. So there are mixed attitudes in Douglas County.

 

I'm glad they got that 20 hours of training which is more than average CCW holder gets.

 

I just moved out of central Doug Co a year ago after living there for 7 years. It is still, I think, in the top 10 richest by income counties in the u.s. the o.p should be corrected, it s not west of Denver but due south. I also don't agree with another poster thinking Highlands Ranch, the closest to Denver and most northern part of county being liberal. The county is very conservative, has a sheriffs dept that has always shown themselves to be quite high quality and cool with relatively large numbers. The county seems to be extremely safe. Want an extremely safe 'country' neighborhood to retire....look at Perry Park near Larkspur (though no services)

 

Pilot, I think Lone Tree is mainly apt living? Were you in an apartment there?

 

Fixed that for you. Most CPL holders I know, myself included, spend a lot of additional time and money for training above and beyond the paltry requirements.

Yes, I live in the area. They did a lock-in because of the called in threat. It was local police that provided the security.

 

I work in Douglas County and applaud their efforts to making schools safer. Back in December there was a credible threat to a local high school by two girls.

We are safer now than we have been in decades.

 

A rifle locked in a car on campus is a heck of a lot more quickly accessable than a rifle locked in a car 15 miles away.

When I moved to Co, Parker was what Castle Pines is today and Castle Rock was pretty small and no Highlands Ranch. I remember back then there was talk about at some point in the future a build up from south Denver to Colorado Springs.

As a Denver area parent myself, albeit in the Socialist People's Democratic Liberation Paradise of Boulder County, I am conflicted about this. On the one hand, the recognition that there are threats and threats need to be met with effective security rather than the cost-saving liberal shibboleth of a "gun-free zone" is positive. On the other hand, and no disrespect is meant to LEOs service, ability, or intent, we know for a fact that good marksmanship is not a regularly displayed attribute of most law enforcement officers, let alone the retired LEOs that will train with the Douglas County deputies occasionally. So my concern is increased collaterals among students as a result increased firepower.

As a taxpayer, I recognize that the cost-benefit isn't there to justify training and maintaining school security guards at SWAT levels. It's a tricky balance but on the whole, I have to believe that arming these chaps with rifles will likely increase their effectiveness (although the "locked in patrol cars" thing makes ZERO sense) in the event of a school shooting situation because I think accurate, aimed fire will be enhanced vs arming them with pistols only.

I am equally conflicted about their choice of a rifle in .223. I would have thought a 9mm s/a carbine would offer the best set of compromises for the intended role. Any other thoughts on this?
