My Fiance` has taken up with my Savage 14 American Classic in .325 WSM, and has claimed it for her deer rifle. It has a Limbsaver, and to me the recoil on it is no problem, but she would like a little less thump. She loves shooting and hunting, and has killed a 10 pointer of her own using a shotgun. So the way I see it, if she is wanting to go hunting with me, then she can have the gun. I am just fine using my .300 Win Mag.

So I'm thinking of using either the 150gr Hornady's or the 180gr ballistic tips and run them with a starting load of Varget. Manual shows 55gr should give 2770 with the 180's . That should get recoil down from 30-32 ft/lbs to the 20ish range.

Anyone forsee any problems with this idea, or have any suggestions to make it work better ? She's not going to be taking any 300+ yd shots, so the range really shouldnt matter.

I think it's ok, as long as the rifle shoots the load accurately enough.

Elkin is not that far from here. Not often I find locals to Cana and Mt Airy.

"...any suggestions..." Work up a load using lighter bullets. 150's will do nicely for deer.
"... Manual shows 55gr..." That's just the starting load. There's no guarantee that it will give the best accuracy.

IMR SR 4759 was specifically intended for light loads in rifles & Accurate 5744 claims to be good for that as well. You could give those a try.

Speer #13 shows a 28.0 Gr SR 4759 load with a 150 Gr bullet for 2028 FPS. That is in the neighborhood of 1/3 less recoil.

It does not have any 325 WSM data at all. The #14 probably does, but I don't know if they show any SR 4759 loads in the #14 manual.

Accurate does not show any loads with 5744 in 325 WSM or 300 Win Mag on their website, but maybe some manuals do. They say it as good for reduced rifle loads, but I don't see any data on the website. Maybe they have it in a couple of calibers I just did not see.

By the way, Walkalong, thanks for the info. That may indeed come in very handy.
