I have a marlin 30AS that the front and rear sights are drifted quite a ways to the right. My dad bought it for me as a first deer rifle, and it came packaged from the factory with a scope. I wonder if this is why, because with the irons drifted this far I don't think it would otherwise have sold. What causes a barrel to be off like this? Could cutting and re-crowning fix? I am looking for a marlin to cut down to 16" for a iron sighted brush gun, would this be a good candidate?

If they're BOTH drifted to the right, then there's nothing wrong with the gun, per se.

For some reason, one sight was drifted to the right, and instead of drifting it back, someone drifted the other one to the right. Maybe one sight was really tight or something.

Either way, it sounds like the gun is straight; the sights are the only thing that probably need attention.
