Trucker: Forced gun-wielding driver into barrier

Three hours later, Danny Termin still was shaken, the vision of a man pulling beside him and pointing a gun difficult to forget.

Termin, 50, of Bellwood, Blair County, was driving a truck south on McKnight Road near Nelson Road in Ross on Wednesday afternoon when Raymond Silak, 26, of Richland, pointed the loaded weapon at him, police said.

Termin responded by turning his car carrier into Silak's pickup truck and smashing it against a concrete median, pinning Silak inside.

Termin then fled his rig, running downhill on McKnight Road. He called 911 and waited for police.

Termin said he was driving in the right lane when he came upon a backhoe traveling about 10 mph. He turned into the left lane in front of a pickup truck, passed the backhoe and returned to the right lane, he said.

The next thing he knew, a man in the pickup pulled beside him and made an obscene gesture, he said.

"He pulled up next to my cab and gave me the finger -- which happens -- so I smiled and waved at him," Termin said.

According to police, Silak then pulled his gun.

"He was there, and racks (a bullet) into the chamber," Termin said. "I decided, 'No, if we're going to have an altercation, the only thing I have to fight with is this truck, and here it is.'

"That's when I rammed him into the Jersey barrier. I think it was just more a reaction. There wasn't time to think."

    Neither driver was hurt.

Police charged Silak with recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and terroristic threats.

"Luckily, no shots were fired," Ross Detective William Barrett said. "Was (Silak) going to shoot him or make threatening gestures? The truck driver was not taking any chances."

Termin was not charged. But he said it will take some time before he forgets what happened.

"I pulled a muscle running down that hill," he said, managing a laugh, as he drove home. "I haven't run that fast since I was in high school football. My kids are going to jive me all night."

It's likely to be his last time though.

Good move on the part of the truck driver.

    Very good move

If this idiot was hot headed enough to threaten someone with a pistol, how is the driver to know he's not hot headed enough to use it? Good for the truck driver, I'm a little sorry the brandisher got away unscathed. Gene pool could use a little chlorine.

I, for one, hope I never have to fire a 12-cylinder diesel in anger.

...That old diesel engine made an eerie sound
When Papa fired it up and headed into town

Well, the picture in the paper showed the scene real well
Papa's rig was buried in the local motel
The desk clerk said he saw it all real clear
He never hit the brakes and he was shifting gears :D

    Mama was a looker
    Lord, how she shined
    Papa was a good'n
    But the jealous kind
    Papa loved Mama
    Mama loved men
    Mama's in the graveyard
    Papa's in the pen

Assuming an 85,000 pound truck, travelling 65mph...

Approx. 1.2 million foot-pounds of energy.

Who said stopping power was a myth?

Simple assault? Why not assault with a deadly weapon?

Any indication of whether the PU Driver had a carry permit? If not then why isn't he getting a weapons charge as well?

Whats with the "terroristic threats" charge was the driver shouting about how "the streets will run red with the blood of the infidels"?

I think people are a little to quick to brand terrorist on what was just an hot headed A-hole.

    IMHO

I don't think "terrorizing" someone necessarily means that you make as though to put a bomb on a bus outside their favorite cafe. You can terrorize someone without the aid of a 757. If you threaten (not just say you're going to, I mean; like, if you make as to cause them harm... Make as...) to hurt somebody, and your actions lead them to a reasonable fear for life, limb, or property, I'd call that "terrorizing" them.

*squint* make as though... I've been away from English class for entirely too long.

    +1

Another believer in the heavy & slow projectile.

"Wonder if I could pull that off on my scoot?"

You're better off with superior acceleration and handling. Never tried a truck but did it to a small buck once. One shot one kill but I broke a really nice Vesco fairing, and some other stuff.

    Enjoy!

We allready have a term for that, it's called "Assault". If you want to punish some one more for a crime, increase the penalties, don't invent new legal classifications for existing crimes:banghead: .

Sorry, just a little pet peeve of mine.:)

I guess everyone that owns a gun now is a terrorist?

Actually the guy with the gun was wielding two weapons: gun + vehicle.

How many people charged with "terrorististic threatening" have actually been convicted of it?

Good on the truck driver, though. I'd like my self defense weapon to be of the 18-wheeled variety, too.
